  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, September 16 - 2009 at 12:33
  • PRESS RELEASE

Emirates Aluminium (Emal) has provided much needed funding to the Emirates Autism Center for the procurement of new pieces of equipment that will help improve the children's' ability to interact socially, enhance sensory and cognitive awareness, speech and overall functioning.

The Centre will use the equipment to create a multi - sensory integration room which was designed to stimulate the senses of autistic individuals. The room will be equipped with a large number of tools, equipment and toys which will help arouse a number of senses simultaneously. Seats made of special material and fabrics will help the children to relax.

A study about two groups of adult autistic individuals shows a clear decrease in a set of autistic behaviors when one of the groups used the multi - sensory integration room.

The new Hyperabaric Chamber Vitaeris 320 will enhance oxygen perfusion to deprived tissues within the body, while reducing the symptoms of autism. The multi - sensory integration room will expose the children to music, lights, vibrations and countless activities that indulge the senses and work to calm an overly excited child.

Duncan Hedditch, Emal CEO, said:
"As a part of the community of Abu Dhabi, Emal is pleased to be able to help support important community initiates. We know that funding for autistim centers is imperative for the early diagnosis and treatment of children."

"This support represents a big opportunity to provide better training and rehabilitation for autistic children. We are trying to help these children develop their various skills and merge into the society with ease by using the latest techniques in care and rehabilitation which will help them overcome the hardships they face in their lives," said Amal Jalal Sabry, Director of Emirates Autism Center.

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affect's an individual's ability to communicate and interact with others. Though there is no single known cause or cure, studies show that early diagnosis and intervention can lead to significantly improved outcomes.

The Journal of Tropical Pediatrics found that 58 of every 10,000 children in the UAE had autistic features. Rising autism rates in the UAE mean there is a need for better treatment and facilities.

"The Emirates Autism Center can now provide even more effective treatment for autistic children, turning a difficult situation into a hopeful one. With the right services and support, we can help these children lead fuller and healthier lives," added Sabry.
Emal's equipment donation helps improving the lives of Emirates Autism Center 45 students.

About Emal:

Emal is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (Dubal) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex. The project will be built in two phases and utilise Emirati-developed technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, Emal will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two. The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.

Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities. This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 17,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and almost 2000 people direct employment during operations.

Emal adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.

About Emirates Autism Center:

Founder, Amel Galal Sabry had an autistic child and started the center to provide help for other struggling families in the region that had nowhere to turn to for help. Unfortunately, most of the funding is coming from the families themselves and the center is in need of more outsourced donations, such as the significant one from Emal that truly made a world of difference.

There is a need to expand the center as the rates of autism in the UAE are growing. For anyone who would like to help, please contact Amel on 971 50 621 4319.
