Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort
In the Masai language, 'sopa' means welcome. The Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort, located on the edge of a 177 square kilometre freshwater lake, certainly makes guests feel welcome.
There are 21 crescent-shaped cottages which contain four hotel rooms each - for a total of 84 rooms. The charm of the stone on the exterior walls is carried indoors as well. The ground floor rooms have two queen size beds and a sunken living room, with floor-to-ceiling rounded glass windows. The banisters on the outside staircases, which lead to the upper rooms, are covered with entwined creepers and bougainvilleas.
The brick walkways, surrounded by lush greenery, invite you to take a stroll. Apparently, it isn't just the humans who think so. There are zebras, giraffes, and gazelles meandering around the Sopa Resort grounds. There are monkeys, too. But, they don't meander - they leap and frolic. The hotel's grassy path provides a picturesque short walk to the shore of Lake Naivasha, where you can take a boat ride to see the hippos.
The wood-paneled, domed ceiling in the dining room is breath-taking. The restaurant serves a combination of European, African and Asian dishes. While breakfast and lunch are served buffet style, dinner is a lovely, formal sit down affair.
If you and your colleagues need to do some strategic planning or creative thinking, this is the place to do it. Surrounded by towering cactus plants and flowers of every color, your mind will be cleared, enabling you to think of innovative solutions to your biggest challenges.
Lake Nakuru Lodge
Lake Nakuru Lodge, which sits atop a high hill, is nestled in the heart of Lake Nakuru National Park. The Lodge provides accommodation for up to 120 people.
The Lodge is designed to blend with its surroundings and to encourage up-close encounters with animals. In fact, baboons play on the side lawn and entertain diners while they eat. All meals are served buffet style, with plenty of variety. Seating for lunch is available outside on the terrace, with a view of the countryside and Lake Nakuru in the distance.
Room types include family rooms, cottages, or suites. Although the regular hotel rooms are standard (and the hotel has an on-going battle with nature, which the insects usually win), the landscaping and gardens are attractive. The pool is large and the surrounding area is appealing.
Lake Nakuru National Park, known as the 'greatest bird spectacle on earth,'
covers approximately 180 square kilometres. Nearly one million flamingos feed on the algae in the alkaline waters.
There is much more to the park than birds. Simply driving from the park entrance to the hotel is the equivalent of a game drive. During our ride, we were able to spend a few delightful minutes observing an entire rhino family!
