Nordsee, Europe's largest fish restaurant chain, opens first Middle East outlet at The Dubai Mall

  • PRESS RELEASE

Nordsee, Europe's largest fish restaurant chain based in Bremerhaven, Germany, with over 400 outlets across Europe, has begun implementing its ambitious expansion plan for the MENA region by opening its first outlet in the region at The Dubai Mall.

Nordsee, the ultimate name in seafood casual dining in Europe, plans to replicate its successful concept in the region, in partnership with Cairo-based Ocean Fresh Enterprise, Master Franchisee of Nordsee for the MENA region, and part of the reputable Lokma Group.

The Nordsee Dubai outlet, located on the Lower Ground (LG) Foodcourt in The Dubai Mall, brings to the region's seafood lovers a range of fish-based Soups and Salads, Hot Snacks, Sandwiches, Meals, Shrimps on Skewers and lobster specialities. A select gathering of media persons was treated to a sampling of Nordsee's signature dishes at The Dubai Mall.

Christof Becker, Managing Director of Nordsee, said:

"We believe we have a niche market in the region, as our concept of fish-only casual dining restaurants does not exist here. We are delighted to have found the right partner in the Lokma Group, which has extensive regional expertise in the logistics of handling fresh produce. This is important because all our fish is flown in straight from Germany with the stamp of quality that has made Nordsee such a huge success across Europe."

"Our first outlet in The Dubai Mall will introduce to the region's fish lovers our unique fish dishes, boasting the same standards as found in our outlets in Europe. With over 100 years of experience in seafood business, Nordsee will make sure that customers get hooked on our fish," added Becker.

Yehia Enany, Vice Chairman, Lokma Group, commented: "Nordsee is a concept that will be warmly embraced by a region that lacked high quality fish offerings in casual dining setting. Nordsee fish dishes are unique because they are prepared without bones and scales. They are more westernised and each outlet provides a variety of options, including exotic salads and sandwiches. Such options were not available for casual diners in the region. As of now, we will import all fish from Germany, but we plan to customise a part of our menu for local tastes."

Speaking about Ocean Fresh Enterprise's plans, Enany said: "We have plans to open 30 Nordsee outlets across MENA region in five years. Following the commissioning of our first outlet in Dubai, we are finalising plans to launch full-fledged seafood restaurants - which are different from the food court model - in prime locations in the UAE and Egypt. Several countries in the region, including the GCC, will see the opening of such restaurants as well as food court outlets over the coming months."

"Our immediate plans include opening two large restaurants in Cairo and one food court outlet in City Centre, Mirdif, Dubai, in early 2010," added Enany. "We are constantly looking for new prime locations across the region to expand the Nordsee chain."

Khaled Mostafa, Operations Director - Middle East, Ocean Fresh Enterprise Ltd, said: "Nordsee is here to deliver the highest levels of quality and customer service, through a team of diverse nationalities to represent the cosmopolitan spirit of Dubai. We are offering two kinds of service: dining and take-away. Soon, we will start our home delivery service."

Nordsee has over 400 stores in Europe, including owned stores in Germany and Austria. It has franchise stores in Switzerland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Spain and Turkey.

Nordsee runs three different models of stores: the food court outlets (serving hot and cold snacks and mini-meals); restaurants (more extensive and elaborate menu that food court outlets) and seafood buffets (fresh fish, lobsters and fish salads).

Nordsee's Dubai Mall outlet features some mouth-watering dishes on its menu, including salad dishes like Cocktail Marseilles Salad, Rostock Herring Salad, Shrimps Salad Mediterranean style; Hot Snacks like Mix Box, Shrimps Box, Potato Box and Fish & Chips; Sandwiches like Shrimp Baguette, Smoked Salmon Roll and Smoke Salmon Wrap and a wide range of Meals such as Baked Pollack au Gratin, Grilled Salmon Fillet, Wok Fried Salmon, Lobster with Salad and Spinney Lobster Tail.
