James Rubin Joins Prominent U.S. speakers at Global Education Conference in Bahrain

James Rubin, broadcaster and former policy advisor to U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, has joined a strong line-up of U.S. education experts for a global conference to be held in Bahrain next month.

Rubin will moderate some of the sessions, and will be featured alongside Dr Tony Wagner, Co-director of the Change Leadership Group at Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dennis Shirley, Professor of Education, Lynch School of Education, Boston College, Janice Jackson, Lecturer on Education and Senior Associate for the Executive Leadership Program, Harvard Graduate School of Education and Nancy L. Ames, Consultant to the College Board and former Vice President of Education Development Centre (EDC).

The Education Project, to be held at the Shaikh Isa Cultural Centre and National Library in the Kingdom's capital Manama, will begin with a lively televised debate on 'The state of educational outcomes.' The discussion will be chaired by Tony Wagner, of Harvard Graduate School of Education 'Change Leadership Group,' and will discuss why education levels fail to meet expectations and why reform programmes designed to resolve the problem often do not have the desired effect.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board which is supporting the event, said:

"The Education Project will bring together leading experts from across the globe and from all facets of education. Most have spent a lifetime committed to the cause; they understand what works and what does not. And they are passionate about identifying concrete solutions to one of the greatest challenges facing the world today; education is the single most important factor in bringing stability, productivity and prosperity to all societies."


The inaugural conference aims to identify practical solutions for the gap in the quality of the global education system. Organizers hope to encourage commitment from both the private and public sector to adapt proven models of innovation for wider roll-out, matching donors with projects to enable real outcomes.

The Education Project is free to attend for educational professionals from all sectors as well as from public and private sector institutions with an interest in developing new models and standards in education.

- Where is the funding to come from? Public-private partnerships?

The structure of the school system:
Centralizing Vs. Decentralizing An early start: Increasing long-term learning outcomes through pre-school education

About the speakers:

Dr Tony Wagner, has served as Co-Director of the Change Leadership Group (CLG) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education since its inception in 2000. An initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, CLG is a "R&D" center that helps teams to be effective change leaders in schools and districts.

Dennis Shirley's educational works spans from the nitty-gritty micro-level of assisting beginning teachers to the macro-level of designing and guiding large-scale research and intervention projects for school districts, states, and non-profit agencies. He recently completed a study of the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement and its contribution to student achievements in Canada's highest achieving province.

Janice Jackson is a lecturer in Educational Leadership and Organizations at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is the Senior Associate on the Wallace funded Executive Leadership Program for Educators. The initiative is a multi-year collaborative effort of the Harvard Business School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government, working with district and state superintendents and their teams to help bring high quality teaching and learning to scale.

Nancy L. Ames has engaged in educational research and development, technical assistance, and policy and advocacy for more than 40 years. She serves as an independent consultant to the Education Development Center Inc (EDC), the College Board, and Edvantia, Inc.
