Johnson Controls wins $87m Riyadh Project at Princess Noura bint Abdulraham University

  • Saudi Arabia: Thursday, October 01 - 2009 at 15:29
  • PRESS RELEASE

Johnson Controls, the global leader in energy efficiency and sustainability, announces a record-breaking $87m project win at Princess Noura bint Abdulraham University, the world's biggest women only university being built in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

"Though we are excited about the scope of this project win, it is about much more than breaking records. It is a great opportunity to showcase cutting edge, environmentally friendly solutions like these York chillers that reflect our commitment to sustainable development. That we get to do this in a truly unique institution of higher education such as Princess Noura University makes it that much more important to us,"

said Magdy Mekky, Vice President and Managing Director, Middle East for Johnson Controls.

Located in Riyadh, the Princess Noura bindt Abdulrahman University is dedicated to the empowerment of women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is one of the largest universities in the Middle East and will offer courses in subjects as diverse as nanotechnology, bio-sciences, information technology, medicine, dentistry, nursing, naturopathy, languages, instant translation and pharmacy. The university's design is environmentally friendly and the campus will include an administration building, a central library, conference centers, buildings for 15 academic faculties, several laboratories and a state-of-the-art, 700-bed hospital.

"Johnson Controls and its joint venture partner the Al Salem Group are committed to sustainable development. We are delighted to be suppliers for a noble initiative such as the Princess Noura University. Our chillers, coupled with our commitment to customer satisfaction and our ability to offer ingenious solutions will contribute to building a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world," added Basil Abdul Aziz, Managing Director of Al Salem Johnson Controls.

Al Salem Johnson Controls, the company's joint venture in Saudi Arabia, will supply 26 York-brand chillers to Princess Noura University. The chillers are dual compressor centrifugal chillers with a closed loop condenser cooling water circuit. Being radiator cooled, the chillers will not only save more than 2100 gallons of water per minute of chiller operation, they will also save the considerable amount of energy that would be required to treat that water. The chillers use HFC-134A refrigerant which does not contribute to ozone depletion.

Each chiller has a capacity of 2070 tons of refrigeration, and when operated together they boast a total cooling capacity of 58,000 TR which is equivalent to the cooling delivered by 58,000 metric tons of melting ice in a day. Manufactured in San Antonio, Texas, the York units are proven market leaders in energy efficiency. Al Salem Johnson Controls will also supply radiators for the chillers, making this one of the company's largest single orders in its history.

The first time Johnson Controls gained distinction with the largest-ever chiller order in the world was for the Pearl Qatar project. A few months later, the company succeeded in breaking its own record when awarded the Bahrain Bay project. It credits a combination of willingness to understand and satisfy customer requirements, a commitment to sustainable solutions, and its one-of-a-kind product capabilities for the most recent win.
