As part of SHS plan for the same, all the nurses at SHS have been trained through specialized courses and workshops, which include definition, characteristics of the virus, symptoms, signs of the disease, mode of transmission, identification of infected cases, severity factors in adults and children, precautions as well as treatment methods.
SHS is implementing its campaign in a total of 303 governmental schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the start of the new academic year of 2009. This is done by educating the students about the definition, symptoms and providing advice for protecting against H1N1.
Additionally, distribution of brochures, posters and fliers is undertaken to make them aware of the steps and precautions to be followed. To ensure the dissemination of useful information in the community, 3 million e-mailers will be sent containing all the information from the campaign's print collaterals. The collaterals have been designed in a simple manner to effectively educate students, while detailed brochures targeting parents and teachers will also be distributed inside and outside the schools through a comprehensive database.
Commenting on the importance of the campaign, Dr. John Evangelista - Director, Ambulatory Healthcare Services- SEHA, said:
"Taking forward the core AHS proposition and objective which is 'Healthy family. Healthy community.' we have come together to work towards raising awareness in the entire community on preventing and facing H1N1. The campaign will play an important role in containing the spread of this virus through educating everyone using simple, brief information along with visual illustrations. This ensures information for students in a simple, yet effective way."
Dr. Hatem El Gusain- Manager, School Health Services added, "We at SHS, are ensuring that this campaign reached out to every member of the community including parents, teachers and, especially, children. People frequenting small or large gatherings such as in buses, schools or any crowded places, should follow the basic guidelines and necessary precautions to avoid the spread of this disease. These include simple and easy steps like washing hands regularly, eating healthy food, consulting a doctor immediately in case of the appearance of any symptoms and taking complete rest until recovery."
Through this campaign, SHS also assures parents that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure the well-being of students' health and promote good health at all times.
