Saudi cleric fired for criticizing new university

A top Saudi cleric who demanded that religious scholars should vet the curriculum at a new mixed-gender university has been removed from his duties as a member of a top council of religious scholars, the state news agency SPA said on Sunday. King Abdullah gave no reason for the move, but the decision came after the cleric, Sheikh Saad al-Shithri, had said scholars should vet the curriculum at the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to prevent alien ideologies such as 'evolution', Reuters has reported.
