The current CEO Mr. Duncan Hedditch will stay in his role to oversee the final stage of construction and ensure an orderly transition. Following the handover after commencing of operations, Mr. Hedditch will continue to serve in an advisory capacity for Emal.

The Board of Directors confirmed the appointment of Mr. Mazrooei unanimously and thanked Mr. Hedditch for his exemplary efforts in delivering the project on budget and to schedule.

"As Emal moves from construction to operations, it is natural that we begin to shift our focus to the operational aspects of the smelter. Saeed brings years of valuable experience in managing day to day operations to Emal, and we have every confidence in his abilities to lead this project into the next phase," said Emal Chairman, Mr. Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

Mr. Mazrooei brings more than 25 years experience to Emal. Prior to his role as Vice President of UAE Operations at Dolphin Energy, he held key management positions with ARCO Dubai. He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Gonzaga University, USA and a MSc in Gas Engineering and Management from Salford, UK.

Mr. Hedditch commented:
"Being at the helm of one of the largest diversification projects in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is a truly remarkable experience, but as the construction stage nears completion, it's the right time for me to hand over the reins. In Saeed Emal has found the right man for the job, and I look forward to working closely with him over the coming months."

Over the next months, Mr. Mazrooei and Mr. Hedditch will focus on the completion of Phase One construction and a smooth transition. Emal's staff was informed of the management transition by a CEO assembly meeting this morning.

Notes and media contacts

Emal is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex.

The project will be built in two phases and utilise DUBAL DX technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, Emal will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two.

The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Al Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, tee ingot, extrusion billet and sheet ingot.

Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities.

This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 17,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and approximately 2,000 people direct employment during operations.

Emal adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
