Dr. Weir made the statement at a lecture hosted by the Dubai School of Government, the latest in a series of leadership sessions in which he talked about his book The CEO Shift and offered solutions as to how CEOs in the region can navigate through the crisis.
"Most of the CEOs in the GCC are not prepared to lead their companies out of the recession because many of them are simply waiting on it to go away," said Dr. Weir.
"They are still attempting to attract the entire world to them, rather than figuring out how to go to the entire rest of the world," he continued. "Across this body of water (the Arabian Gulf) there are 3 billion people, and we in the GCC are still thinking about, 'how do we bringing 3 billion people to us!"
This shift in thinking outwards, from our local geographies to the rest of the world, is a 'market shift' that is fundamental to getting out ahead of the recession.
He then noted that the crisis is a crucial transition period for companies and their leaders, whose success in managing the situation will largely depend on making fundamental shifts in thinking - that is, shifting the focus on the size and location of their target markets as well as the size and speed of growth for their respective companies.
