Siemens is a founding member of the partnership program KAUST Industrial Collaboration Program (KICP) which aims to intensify cooperation with industry on a regional and a global scale. The focus of the international university's research activities will include renewable energy, environmental technologies, and material and biosciences.
"This partnership is an important building block for expanding our network of competencies," said Professor Hermann Requardt, Siemens Chief Technology Officer and CEO of the Healthcare Sector, as he signed the cooperation agreement.
"We are committed to "open innovation", in other words working closely together with research facilities throughout the world to develop answers to the most important questions of our time." Therefore Siemens maintains research cooperation worldwide with the most renowned universities.
"The KAUST covers precisely the topics that help us in the development of sustainable solutions for our green technologies,"
said Requardt.
KAUST will serve as an important partner in a Saudi Arabia where Siemens has been represented for more than 75 years and currently has over 1800 employees. Siemens' Generation 21 program has a successful history of working with educational institutions in Saudi Arabia.
KAUST itself is part of a research network which includes many of the world's leading universities including Stanford University in California and Cambridge University in the U.K. The faculty consists of international scientists with diversified backgrounds with researchers and students having been drawn strictly on the basis of merit to join KAUST.
"Industrial collaboration is one of the key strategies of KAUST," said Professor Shih, KAUST president.
"KICP's founding membership provides access and an overview of the research work being executed on the main campus in Thuwal, as through the significant global collaborative research network, a seat on the KAUST Industry Advisory Board and strategic access to KAUST's start ups and a seed fund program. KAUST is proud to have Siemens as a founding member of the program.
KICP is designed to maximize effective industrial collaboration in the Kingdom and internationally by engaging key partners, all with a keen interest in translating knowledge into economic growth and job creation.
As a world leader in industry, energy and healthcare, Siemens has grown to hold leading positions in these sectors in the Kingdom with more than 1,800 employees countrywide. Siemens activities in Saudi Arabia date back to the early 1930s when the country imported its first power plant equipment.
From the very beginning Siemens has made a significant contribution to the development of the country's infrastructure. One third of the power used in the Kingdom is generated and distributed by Siemens.
Today, Siemens in Saudi Arabia is committed to supporting the careers of young Saudis through targeted professional recruitment and training programs. The company also proactively supports the government's efforts to effect social change in the country by recruiting Saudi women.
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is an international, graduate-level research university dedicated to inspiring a new age of scientific achievement in the Kingdom, in the region, and around the globe.
As an independent, merit-based institution, KAUST employs many of the best practices from leading research universities and enables top researchers from around the globe and across all cultures to work together to solve challenging scientific and technological issues.
The KAUST global research and education network support diverse talents, both on its campus and at other premier universities and research institutions, through collaborative research agreements, grants, and student scholarship programs.
