Qatar delegation participates in ITU Telecom World 2009

ictQATAR Secretary General, Dr. Hessa Al Jaber, led Qatar's official delegation to participating in the 11th ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva.

TELCOM WORLD, is one of the leading events in the global telecommunication and information communication technology (ICT) sector, with attendees from around the globe attending yesterday's opening.

The week-long event, hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), comes under the theme "Open Networks, Connected Minds." Its goal is to connect members of the ICT sector worldwide to foster constructive dialogue and partnerships between developing and developed countries. ITU Telecom World focuses on a number of areas, including new regulatory models around the world, ICTs and climate change, cyber security, ICT & economic growth, ICT & development, future spectrum needs, and how the future Internet will look like.

"ITU Telecom World is a unique opportunity to engage in fruitful discussion on key ICT issues that have both regional and global implications. This event is helps establish a global common understanding of ICT's pivotal role is shaping the future and how it directly contributes to economic growth in different countries,"


said Dr. Hessa Al Jaber.

Dr. Al Jaber attended the Opening Ceremony, which marked the event's official launch. Prominent speakers at the ceremony included ITU's Secretary General Dr. Hamadoun Toure, Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, and President of Rwanda Paul Kagame. A video message from former South African President, Nelson Mandela, was also shown at the opening.

As part of her participation in the event, Dr. Al Jaber held a meeting with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is a not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet's unique identifiers.

During the meeting, Dr. Al Jaber stressed that there should be no government intervention in its processes, thus differentiating between governments' potential active role and their direct intervention in the Corporation's naming and numbering policies to ensure full ICANN independence. Representatives from ICANN also shared their current and future plans in accountability, consumer protection and security with Dr. Al Jaber during the meeting.

On the first day, Dr. Al Jaber visited the ITU Telecom World 2009 Exhibition, which showcased hundreds of the latest ICT innovations from key ICT players worldwide. She also attended the opening forum and the opening summit, titled "ICTs for Economic Growth." The forum addressed various concerns shared by members of the ICT industry including, cyber security, intellectual copyright and e-content.
