DLA Piper appoints new Regional Managing Partner for the Middle East

  • Saudi Arabia: Thursday, October 08 - 2009 at 15:40
  • PRESS RELEASE

DLA Piper announced that Abdul Aziz Al-Yaqout has been appointed by the board as the new Regional Managing Partner for the Middle East. The appointment will see Abdul Aziz lead seven offices across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Abdul Aziz succeeds David Church, who has led DLA Piper's practice in the Middle East since its inception in 2006. DLA Piper now has a presence in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

"We are pleased that Aziz has taken up this appointment. Although market conditions in 2009 have been very challenging in the region, we see the Middle East as having long term strategic importance for DLA Piper and believe that Aziz will provide the leadership required for us to achieve our objectives,"

said Sir Nigel Knowles, Joint CEO at DLA Piper.

Nigel continued: "We thank David Church for his contribution to our business in the region and look forward to working with him in his role as International Development Partner."

Abdul Aziz, 36, a Kuwaiti-national, joined DLA Piper's Cologne office in 2004 and was Managing Partner of the office until he relocated to Kuwait earlier this year.

He is a restructuring and corporate lawyer who represents corporate clients and financial investors across a number of sectors and geographies. He was elected as a member of the Board in July 2009.

Abdul Aziz said: "It is an honour to be asked to lead the Middle East practice. I know the market in 2009 has made life difficult for law firms following the substantial influx of lawyers in 2008. There will be a period of adjustment but I share DLA Piper's vision for the region and am pleased to have responsibility for a market which has such strategic importance for the wider business. I look forward to working closely with my colleagues in the region."
