This High Level Meeting, in which many States and International organizations are participating, is around the proposals and strategies to achieve emissions reductions for the aviation industry and to approve a program of action in international aviation and climate change to be recommended to high diplomatic conference (COP 15) that will take place in Copenhagen in December 2009, to review the goals set by the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In line with its long track record on environmental leadership, the UAE delegation presented a proposal to the aviation industry represented in this high level meeting supporting the ICAO work on aviation emissions. The paper further supports the establishment of medium and long term goals for emissions reductions and suggests the recognition of aircraft operators who have already invested heavily in modern, low emissions fleets (the 'early movers' principle).

This and other proposals have been widely discussed during the first day of the high level meeting and the UAE was selected by the Chairman as one of the states participating in the group drafting the declaration that will be the outcome of this important meeting.
