Nahayan signs a MoU with Muhammad Yunus

Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of Zayed University, signed with Bangladesh's Nobel Peace Prize winner, economist Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of Yunus Centre, a memorandum of understanding for a period of 5 years between Zayed University and Yunus Centre, to promote mutual understanding and cooperation in areas of common interest in education, research, information gathering and action planning so as to deepen an understanding of each other's cultures.

The signing ceremony was held at His Excellency's Abu Dhabi palace in the presence of H.E Dr. Anwar Mohammed Qarqash Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Federal National Council Affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Dr.Sulaiman Al Jassim Vice President of Zayed University, Dr Hamdan Musallam Al Mazroui Chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, and several diplomats.

After the signing, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Minister of Higher Education Scientific Research, President of Zayed University, stressed the importance of the cooperation between the university and Yunus Centre, especially because of it's association with enhancing the students awareness regarding poverty issues and the suffering of needy families in developing countries, through developing lectures as part of the curriculum which will give students a better understanding of poverty and techniques which have been successfully used to enhance development plans to assist those needy families, in addition to organizing student trips to locations recommended by Yunus Centre, so students can learn first-hand techniques and programs which have been set up to assist the economic development of the poor in developing countries, and the development of a Grameen - Zayed University Creative Lab to carry out activities on the Zayed University Campus in cooperation with the Yunus Centre.

His Excellency also commended the unique initiative by Professor Muhammad Yunus in establishing the Yunus Centre which has already been registered as a trust, aimed primarily at research and dissemination and exchange of information and dedicated to promoting Professor Muhammad Yunus' vision of a poverty free world including the furthering of microcredit and creation of social business worldwide.

On his part, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of Yunus Centre, said: "We are looking forward to the cooperation with Zayed University through Yunus Centre as it will enhance the students awareness regarding poverty issues and promote a vision of a poverty free world through furthering the philosphy of microcredit and creation of social business, and the creation of poverty museums worldwide engaging especially the youth of each country."
