USAID and JUST conclude Al Akeeder landfill research

A celebration was held at Jordan University for Science and Technology (JUST) to announce the completion of Al Akeeder Landfill Energy Potential research, which has been supported by USAID Jordan.

The research aimed to estimate the amount of biogas that can be recovered from Al Akeeder landfill which will pave the way for a public private partnership that will develop a landfill gas (LFG) facility for energy recovery.

The celebration convened under the patronage of the Mayor of Irbid who deputized for His Excellency Minister of Municipal Affairs Engineer Shehadeh Abu Hdaib, in the presence of the President of JUST Professor Wajeeh Owaise, and USAID Jordan Mission Director Mr Jay Knott, as well as faculty members and senior USAID officials.

Two presentations on the project were made for the benefit of the guests after which they went to Al Akeeder site to ignite Al Akeeder biogas flare in a symbolic gesture that aims to attract attention to this future driver of energy recovery facility.

Al Akeeder landfill site in northern Jordan serves more than 20 municipalities that comprise about 70 towns and villages and receives a daily amount of 700 tones of solid waste.

It is considered a hot environmental spot that adversely impacts the environment. USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ) agreed to fund a project to estimate the amount of biogas that can be recovered from Al Akeeder landfill, particularly since the estimated energy potential of the landfill is about 4.2 MW.

The study estimates of the LFG amount emancipating from the landfill allows for the development of a biogas facility for energy recovery which paves the way for public private sector partnership to develop and manage the landfill biogas facility. On another front, the Al Akeeder landfill study will serve as a prerequisite when applying for international Clean Development Mechanism.

Speaking to the guests, USAID Mission Director Mr Jay Knott said the Al Akeeder aligns well with USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ)'s vision of the Irbid Development strategy which calls for a thriving economic engine in the Northern Region that is supported by clean environment.

"The research results will no doubt engage the private sector to develop a control and management facility at Al Akeeder that will drive economic stability,"

he added

The USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ) is a five year broad economic development initiative implemented by Deloitte Consulting LLP and a sizeable team of international and Jordanian partner firms.

By supporting improvements in the business environments and providing assistance to expand innovation and productivity in Jordanian businesses, it supports the main objective of building up the private sector as a powerful engine of economic growth.
