Hotel guests get special Abu Dhabi race week welcome

All hotel guests checking into Abu Dhabi's three, four and five star hotels and superior hotel apartments over the next two weeks are being given customised welcome packs, as part of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority's (ADTA) Grand Prix destination awareness programme.

The specially-developed packs include a welcome message from ADTA's Chairman, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, a 35-page motivational brochure, the official visitors' guide, a Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque postcard booklet, 31 flyers covering the emirate's wide-range of attractions and cultural traditions, a fridge magnet depicting one of six key landmarks and dedicated fact sheets for Abu Dhabi city, the Oasis City of Al Ain and Al Gharbia - the emirate's vast western region.

The initiative is one of many the Authority is implementing around race week to enhance visitor experience vibrancy for the 50,000 motorsports fans expected to descend on the UAE capital for the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009.

"We are going to great lengths to welcome the many Abu Dhabi visitors and want to ensure their time here is both positive and memorable. We are undertaking a number of race week initiatives which will greatly enhance the entire visitor experience and which will speak to Abu Dhabi's reputation for serving up superb hospitality,"

said Ahmed Hussein, Deputy Director General, ADTA - the body which manages the tourism industry of the emirate.

The Authority is also opening six new visitor information centres throughout the emirate, which will be manned round-the-clock by trained visitor service representatives and in three of the centres - in the Al Wahda, Marina and Abu Dhabi malls - a special 'Drivers' Challenge;' will be held on racing simulators. Running until November 2nd the competition gives shoppers and visitors the chance to test their track skills and compete in weekly time trial races to clock up the fastest times to win great prizes.

10 things to know about the Emirate of Abu Dhabi
1. Abu Dhabi city is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The wider Abu Dhabi emirate occupies over 80% of the country's total landmass.
2. Unknown to most, Abu Dhabi is archipelagic with nearly 200 islands dotted along its coast - island-hopping is a popular pastime.
3. Abu Dhabi is on its way to becoming a global cultural centre with the creation of the Cultural District on Saadiyat Island. 4. The Al Ain Palace Museum was once the home of the late Sheikh Zayed and was a hub of political life. The palace became a museum in 1998 and has a large collection of material about the ruling family.
5. The towering Jebel Hafeet heights, rising 1,240 metres, afford an impressive view over Al Ain.
6. The Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort is the most progressive facility of its kind in the region, and is home to over 4,000 animals including the indigenous Arabian oryx and sand gazelle; at least 30% of the 180 species in the park are considered endangered.
7. The picturesque Al Jahili Fort is one of the UAE's most historic buildings. It has been carefully restored and houses a permanent exhibition of the work of British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger - whom the locals affectionately refer to as Mubarak Bin London - and who famously crossed the Rub Al Khali or Empty Quarter in the 1940s.
8. Al Gharbia makes up over two thirds of the UAE and is home to Liwa, an historic oasis town which sits at the entry to the Rub Al Khali - Empty Quarter - the world's largest sand desert.
9. Moreeb Hill in the Liwa desert is, at 300 metres, one of the world's tallest sand dunes. With a 50 degree incline to the top it is the pinnacle for desert driving enthusiasts.
10. Sir Bani Yas Island, a former Royal nature reserve, hosts the Arabian Wildlife Park with free-roaming animals including a 400-plus strong herd of Arabian Oryx (gazelles) - one of the world's largest.
