The championship, being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre is expected to draw hundreds of digital gaming enthusiasts from the region and abroad.
"Digital Gaming has become one of the leading trends in the world today, providing a perfect combination of learning and entertainment to the young generation. Etisalat recognizes the significance of this emerging trend and is increasingly looking forward to be associated with the world of gaming and entertainment through innovative Weyak services. By sponsoring the World Game Championship 2009, Etisalat is striving to bring the vibrancy and youthfulness of Weyak brand to its customers that can be well associated with this event,"
said Khalifa Al Shamsi, Sr. Vice President, Marketing, Consumer Services, Etisalat.
"The success of the mall-based tournament of WGC 2009 has proven to bring out the best in local gamers. Weyak from Etisalat is delighted to be associated with WGC 2009 that is not only expanding the gaming population in the region but also improving the quality of electronic athletes and training them to compete at a global level. It is remarkable that this tournament is sending Emirati gamers to represent the UAE in the World Cyber Games in Chengdu, China in November. I wish WGC and all the participants all the very best for the upcoming championships," Al Shamsi added.
The finals are expected to have the attendance of the best gamers for Counter Strike, Warcraft, Guitar Hero, Virtua Tennis, Street Fighter and Pro Evolution Soccer, and three arcade games including American High Striker, Sega Rally, and Deal or No Deal.
According to Eng. Anas Al Madani, Vice President of Index Holding, "This second sequel of the games has given us more than enough validation that we are doing something right for the region's gaming industry. We expected an increase in turn-out of participants from last year, but we have never anticipated that the increment will be more than 100 percent from both local and the region. Indeed, the gaming culture of the Middle East is growing very fast. The Arab youth is becoming more adept with the latest technology of games. It is our honor to achieve the partnership of Weyak from Etisalat in staging the upcoming grand finals of WGC 2009 on the floors of Dubai World Trade Centre."
