Philips' participation comes in line with making a significant thrust to promote energy efficiency in the Middle East, following the announcement made on Monday the 19th of October regarding Philips' unilateral decision to phase-out the sale of incandescent lamps in the GCC and a call to make the switch to energy efficient lighting.
Louis Hakim, VP of Royal Philips Electronics and CEO of Philips Middle East is participating in the Gulf Business panel debate, 'Can the Gulf be the Driving Force of the New World?', addressing the importance of energy efficiency and the steps that Philips is taking to maintain a green environment.
"Research confirms that unless a serious step is taken towards addressing environmental challenges, a serious environmental crisis will follow,"
says Louis Hakim.
"A failure to act immediately is only one consequence. It has also been determined that awareness of environmental issues is lagging, especially in this region, therefore Philips' strong attempt to educate the public through its corporate social responsibilities on energy efficiency and other related initiatives such as the phase-out of energy inefficient lamps in the GCC."
At the venue, a Philips Lighting booth will broadcast educational clips on green environment, sustainable cities and other energy efficient related scenarios, while also inviting participants to place a pledge by signing the Philips wall. The wall is meant to inspire U.A.E citizens to take simple steps to save energy and to oath to change to energy efficient lighting.
Simultaneously, Philips is inviting the public for a free screening of the Oscar-winning movie 'An Inconvenient Truth', which is a 2006 documentary film about former Vice President Al Gore's campaign educating citizens about global warming and inspiring them to take action. The screening will take place for a week in Cinestar Cinema, Mall of the Emirates. A kiosk is also positioned by the cinema giving away energy efficient lamps and leaflets to support the call for action on the phasing-out of incandescent lamps.
During the event, Philips has also placed a health check booth at the venue that is in support of Life Pharmacy. The pharmacists will be educating the delegates and visitors on preventative care by performing five basic, quick and easy tests that help give a brief indication on the person's current health status. The tests cover Body Mass Index, sugar level, cholesterol level, lung capacity and blood pressure.
