Education City, the flagship project of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, has come to the United Arab Emirates this week as part of a program to meet with students, parents and school counselors in the Gulf region to inform them of the academic programs, admissions process and vast resources available at Qatar's Education City.

A priority of Qatar Foundation is to promote excellence in education in the region. Education City offers a synergistic environment where students can share facilities, cooperate on research projects, and forge relationships with businesses and other organizations in the public and private sectors.

It is home to campuses of six internationally renowned universities: Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar and Northwestern University in Qatar. Each one of the universities in Education City has been hand-selected to offer its top programs to students in the Gulf region.

Attending one of the prestigious universities in Education City involves costs. In addressing the financial obligation of a degree at Education City, representatives from Qatar Foundation are available to explain the options.

Ms. Arwa Sulieman Ibnouf, Head of Student Services, Education Division of Qatar Foundation, said:
"The combination of financial aid and scholarships is competitive and is evidence of Qatar Foundation's commitment to taking education to a new level. Qatar Foundation is committed to offering help through need-based loans to support the total cost of attending any of Education City universities, merit-based scholarships as well as opportunities for work study. These options are in addition to the scholarship agreement currently in place between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar."

Qatar Foundation and Education City's universities have spent much time over the past years working with school counselors around the region providing the tools, training and support necessary to foster student learning through focused programs and workshops. Each year, Qatar Foundation invites school counselors from the region to Qatar to attend these workshops. Programs have also been developed in cooperation with the universities to develop the students and prepare them for the rigorous academic challenges they will face at Education City.

The curricula and grading standards at the universities at Education City meet the high standards of the degrees delivered at the home campus in the United States. Bryan Zerbe, Director of Admissions at Carnegie Mellon Qatar, explains the concept of the holistic admissions process at Education City. "All of the campuses in Education City seek serious, motivated students who want to pursue their university studies in a highly innovative academic community. Education City offers an educational environment like no other: with big-name universities offering small classes, research opportunities, avenues to exciting internships and careers, and a full spectrum of student clubs, intramural teams, and other opportunities to get involved in the life of the campus."

After the events in the United Arab Emirates, "Discover Education City" will travel to Kuwait, Bahrain and Morocco. The program in each country includes school visits, a counselor event, and a college fair. Representatives from all six of the universities are at the events to explain admission requirements and how applications should be prepared in order to maximize the opportunity for admission. Current students and alumni provide first-hand accounts of their own special Education City experience.
