Landmark Group adopts 'Beat Diabetes' initiative

  • United Arab Emirates: Thursday, October 29 - 2009 at 15:42
  • PRESS RELEASE

Landmark Group, one of Middle East's largest retail conglomerates, today announced that it has adopted a campaign to drive awareness and education on diabetes prevention and management.

As a first step in a series of initiatives to drive better understanding of the condition, Landmark Group will be organising a 4km walkathon on 13 November 2009 to mark World Diabetes Day, observed worldwide on 14 November, to commemorate the birthday of Fredrick Banting, who is credited with the discovery of insulin.

The walk will commence at Safa Park at 8:00am and culminate at Oasis Centre around 9.00am. A good number of business leaders, top government functionaries and celebrities are expected to take part in the walkathon.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council stated, "The benefits of private sector participation in the social and economic wellbeing of a nation cannot be overemphasised. We at Dubai Sports Council are delighted about the 'Beat Diabetes' initiative and lend our full support to Landmark Group in helping to create a fit and healthier society. It is clearly an affirmation of the company's commitment to the social good of our community and will go a long way in complementing the laudable efforts of government authorities in Dubai."

Micky Jagtiani, Chairman, Landmark Group, said:

"UAE is known to have the second highest incidence of diabetes in the world, with almost 20% of the population suffering from the condition. More disturbing is the fact that 50% of those suffering from Type 2 diabetes may not even know they have it. Hence, we have decided to adopt the diabetes cause as part of our CSR agenda."

Free diabetes test centres will be opened at Oasis Centre on the 13 and 14 of November as part of activities marking the World Diabetes Day. The test will be conducted by medical experts from Rashid Hospital and results will be instantaneous. People with signs of susceptibility to diabetes will be advised on how to seek further medical attention.

In addition, Oasis Centre will also be illuminated in blue to align with the global diabetes monument challenge. Notable monuments around the world to be lit up in blue include the Burj Al Arab in Dubai; CN Tower in Toronto, Canada; London Eye in the UK; and Sears Tower in Chicago, USA.

"Unfortunately, diabetes is often considered as a matter of little concern even though it cannot be cured. Nonetheless, the condition can be avoided or properly managed if people are aware. We will leverage the extensive Landmark Group retail network across the country to raise awareness and educate people about diabetes. As a company, we will continue to explore opportunities to extend our Corporate Social Responsibility agenda towards enabling a positive change in our environment and the society at large," Micky Jagtiani added.

"The support from Health Authorities and other public service organisations, as well as our associates & business partners have been phenomenal. It is a testament of the country's desire for a healthier lifestyle. We urge everybody to save the date and be part of this movement called 'Beat Diabetes'; together we will create a fitter and healthier society," Renuka concluded.
