• Syrian-Qatari Holding (SQH) signed the MOU of the project on 31st October 2009 at the Private Public Partnership Conference held in Damascus, Syria.
• The MOU is the conference's first tangible outcome
• The Project will help restrain water pollution and provide clean water for both industrial and agricultural use

The MOU was signed within the framework of SQH's participation at the Private Public Partnership Conference organised by the British Syrian Society between October 30th and November 1st at the Umayyad Congress Palace in Damascus.

Mr. Hassan Mukayed, CEO of SQH said: "This partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Construction contributes to answering the country's need for clean water for industrial and agricultural use. Our investment in the sewage treatment plants will also play an important part in restraining water pollution in Damascus suburbs, Swuedah and the neighbouring areas. This project is fully in-line with SQH's focus on the development of infrastructure projects that can contribute to Syria's economic development and the well-being of its citizens".

This MOU comes after the Ministry of Housing and Construction announced that Syria needed around 183 Sewage treatment plants which they were planning to construct.

SQH is currently considering a few potential strategic regional and global companies to partner with for executing the project.

The two initial projects are located in the cities of Jaramana and Swuedah, where initial studies estimated the population parameters for Jaramana to be 183,000 and 265,000 for years 2028 and 2043 respectively, and 179,000 and 279,000 for years 2025 and 2040 for Swuedah.

SQH will invest in the project on a Build-Operate-Transfer 'BOT' mechanism. The Ministry of Housing and Construction will provide the land, relevant infrastructure to its borders, the expected specifications and quantities of the entering and exiting water.

The ministry would also be responsible for delivering the waste water to the treatment facility, as well as ensuring that an off-take of the output is provided.

The company sets sights on becoming the leading investment firm and partner of choice in Syria by investing in several other sectors such as Power Generation, Agriculture, Dairy & Juice, Phosphate Fertilizers, Healthcare, Real Estate and Financial Services.
