The special set was designed on the occasion of the revival of the Queen Charlottes Ball, the premier social event of the London Season 2009, which took place on 24th September and where Mikimoto was the jewellery sponsor. The brand presented the first of its exclusive Mikimoto Limited Edition Debutante necklace for auction to help raise money for Queen Charlotte's Appeal and also provided debutantes beautiful jewellery to wear for the evening.
Mikimoto European and Middle East Sales Manager, Jeremy Burbanks said,
"Mikimoto is extremely happy to present the Debutante Necklace set designed in honour of Queen Charlotte's Ball, one of London's highly prestigious charity events. Hailed world over as the synonym of beauty and grace, a Mikimoto pearl perfectly complements a young woman's debut into adulthood. The set has received very enthusiastic response in UK particularly from parents wishing to present their daughters a timeless jewel. And as the Middle East tradition cherishes close family bonds, I'm sure this set will be much appreciated here."
An ever progressive design house, Mikimoto has designed a truly memorable piece in keeping with the innovative spirit of the younger generation. For the detachable clasp offers them the option of attaching it on to the stunning 16-inch pearl strand or wearing it as a pendant on an 18k white gold chain. While its presence instantly transforms the lustrous pearl strand into a glamorous red-carpet jewel, when strung on the slender 18k white gold chain as pendant it offers an elegant day time adornment. Matching its beauty is a pair of alluring Akoya cultured pearl, stud earrings designed to flatter its wearer's profile.
Mikimoto's Debutante necklace makes a fitting gift for parents wishing to mark their young daughter's first steps into adulthood that will be treasured and passed on to coming generations of the family.
It was over a century ago in 1893 when Mikimoto cultured the first pearl, expressing a desire to adorn the necks of all women with pearls of the finest kind. And his eponymous pearl jewellery house is indeed the perfect choice for the glamorous event.
A worthy tradition
The debutante season and 'coming out' has its roots in the 18th century when around 1780 King George III held a ball for his wife, Queen Charlotte for her birthday. The Queen Charlotte's Ball with the help of debutantes of the time, helped to raise funds for mothers and babies through the hospital that later became known as Queen Charlotte's Hospital. Actors Daniel Radcliffe, Mischa Barton and Dame Helen Mirren are among the many prominent people born here.
This hospital is home to Professor Lord Winston's world-renowned research unit, helping to prevent premature birth, miscarriage and infertility. His work is the beneficiary of the revival of the fabulous Queen Charlotte's Ball, which was hosted by him, and took place at Durbar Court, the 'Jewel of Whitehall' a venue rarely open to the public.
One of the famous traditions of the Queen Charlotte's Ball was the procession of the debutantes dressed in white and presented to royalty in front of an eight foot high cake. This year's revival too, included a ceremony with a stunning cake made by the Head Chef Patissier of the Savoy Hotel. The international debutantes entered, wearing Pronovias white gowns and Mikimoto's pearls and diamonds and were presented to the glamorous HH Princess Olga Romanov, HRH Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia, and the very dashing HE Don Alfonso di Borbon y Franco, Duke of Anjou & Cadiz.
Mikimoto's elegant and beautiful Debutante Pearl set is now available at Saks Fifth Avenue BurJuman and at Damas Les Exclusives Boutiques in Burj Al Arab, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and at Mina A' Salam.
