Professor Edward Lynch from Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, who has paved the way for the use ozone dental therapy, has presented the technology in his lecture , 'Minimal Invasive Dentistry for the 21st Century' held during the second day of Dentistry 2009 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

In his lecture, 'Minimal Invasive Dentistry for the 21st Century' held during the second day of Dentistry 2009 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Dr Lynch discussed the benefits of using this non-invasive technique to destroy all the bacteria that cause infection and tooth decay.

"We are learning more and more about how the molecular mechanisms of ozone work. Dentistry is changing as we are now using science to practise dentistry the way we should be practising dentistry. This state of the art technology allows us to take a minimally invasive and conservative approach to dental treatment,"

explains Dr Lynch.

This latest dental treatment uses ozone, which is a reactive oxygen molecule, to kill bacteria in less than a minute. Some dentists are using it as an alternative to drilling and filling cavities. The benefits of using dental ozone include eliminating the use of drills, fillings and the use of anaesthetics. It can also kill 99 per cent of bacteria in cavities and can be used to whiten discoloured teeth, which is a very popular treatment option in today's dental practices. Dr Lynch talks about the exciting new potential of using ozonated water in dental practices, as ozonated water kills bacteria and viruses on contact.

"Super bugs can be wiped out by the use of ozonated water," he said. "The best infection control is to place your dental instruments in an ultrasonic bath filled with freshly made ozonated water."

Financially, ozone therapy is mutually beneficial for both the patient and the dental practitioner. Dr Lynch believes that as a long term preventative measure in combating tooth decay this treatment it is not prohibitively expensive and it saves time for both the patient and dentist.

"It will leave you with happier patients who will go back to get their teeth checked more regularly," he adds.

Crafted by IIR Middle East Life Sciences, the organisers of the annual Arab Health Exhibition & Congress, Dentistry 2009 is an opportunity for delegates to attend a selection of workshops in various dental specialities which will provide a strong clinical aspect to the conference. Attendance at a lecture or workshop will carry CME credits, and delegates can expect to leave the event with tangible solutions aimed at saving time and increasing efficiency at their respective practices.

"It is an honour that Dr Lynch has chosen to make his debut presentation in the region at Dentistry 2009 on his exclusive breakthrough research on ozone's inherent link," says Raza Chevel, Conference Producer, IIR Middle East.
