Heroes in Fujairah to celebrate distribution of 50,000 energy saving light bulbs

  • PRESS RELEASE

Fujairah is the latest stop for an initiative by 'Heroes of the UAE' in which over 50,000 energy-saving light bulbs have been handed out to residents during the past three months.

Starting in Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi, followed by Manar Mall in Ras Al Khaimah and now by two weekends of outreach in Fujairah (13-14 and 20-21 November), the campaign will have distributed 55,000 bulbs by the end of November.

Remarkably, if all the energy-saving light bulbs given to citizens replace existing traditional light bulbs, the potential carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings will be equivalent to removing 3,000 cars from the road (which if lined up back-to-back would be more than15 times the height of the Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building).

Engineer Mohamed Saif AL Afkham, General Manager at Fujairah Municipality said;
"As an Emirate, we are facing acute energy challenges and public awareness about energy conservation is a crucial component to tackling this. We are proud to welcome 'Heroes of the UAE' to Fujairah as it complements our growing portfolio of pioneering environmental protection initiatives, including Wadi Wuyarah (the first mountain protected area in the UAE) and our work on coral reef conservation."

Organised by the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF) and the Fujairah Municipality, the latest awareness events, held yesterday and today at Lulu Hypermarket, have had more than 6,000 people visiting the stand to take a complimentary Heroes' energy-saving light bulb.

Also commenting, Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director, EWS-WWF said; "We are delighted to partner with Fujairah Municipality and bring this exciting initiative to the emirate - the response to the event this weekend has been great. Fujairah and the northern emirates are important players in the battle to reduce the UAE's carbon footprint and tackle climate change, and we look forward to continuing this partnership."

Volunteers at all road shows have provided visitors with useful information and energy conservation tips, encouraging them to take a personal pledge to reduce their household energy consumption.

In Fujairah, EWS-WWF and Fujairah Municipality staff have been supported by 40 volunteers from Ownak Ya Watan, (the east coast representative of Takatuf, a national volunteer organization) in the drive to raise awareness about how people can conserve energy at home and help reduce their carbon footprint in the UAE.

Next week staff and volunteers move to Centerpoint in Fujairah on Friday November 20th from 2pm-10pm and Saturday 21st November from 10am-6pm to rally more community support.

As part of an ongoing commitment by EWS-WWF, the initiative will be launching a water awareness drive, a schools engagement phase as well as initiatives engaging the private sector and government institutions in coming months. The campaign was developed in partnership with the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Ministry of Energy, and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Media Company, ADWEA, HSBC and Masdar.
