Yemenia to buy 10 Airbus A320s
- Yemen: Monday, November 16 - 2009 at 10:59
Yemenia Airlines announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire ten Airbus A320 family aircraft. The deal, which requires approval of the board of the airline, is worth about $700m, said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer.
During the 2007 Dubai Airshow, Yemenia placed an order with Airbus for ten Airbus A350 XWB. The carrier is expecting to receive the first of these aircraft in 2015, so the A320s announced today would help the carrier address its capacity needs while it awaits the A350s, said Saleh Alawaji, Yemenia Member of the board of directors.
'Our long-term strategy is to grow with an integrated fleet of super efficient and reliable aircraft,' Alawaji said. 'The A320 shares operational and maintenance commonality with our existing Airbus' and will bring added efficiencies.'
The carrier's long-haul fleet currently operates to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Its expansion plans are focused mainly on Africa and the Indian subcontinent, Alawaji said.
