Dubai Public Libraries honoured for active role in promoting IT literacy in UAE

ICDL GCC Foundation, the governing body and certification authority of the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) programme in the Gulf region, recently presented an appreciation award to Dubai Public Libraries for its continuous contributions towards the advancement of digital literacy in the UAE.

Dubai Public Libraries was lauded by the ICDL GCC Foundation for its efforts in setting up electronic public libraries and offering digital literacy programs through its Umm Suqeim electronic library.

ICDL GCC Foundation had accredited the Umm Suqeim electronic library to offer training courses in basic computer skills using the ICDL curriculum to library users and its staff.

The Umm Suqeim facility has so far awarded certifications to more than 3,000 individuals who have taken the computer proficiency course. The library is recognised as one of the pioneering electronic public libraries in the region and has contributed actively in the efforts to enhance IT literacy among Dubai's different society segments.

Mohammed Al Aridi, Head of Dubai Public Libraries Department, said:
"We are humbled to receive this award of appreciation from ICDL GCC Foundation. This award recognises the dedication and efforts that we have exerted in the promotion of IT literacy among Dubai's diverse society. Moreover, Dubai Public Libraries remains steadfast in its commitment to provide individuals with the necessary courses, training and tools needed to further their computer skills."


Jamil Ezzo, Director General, ICDL GCC Foundation, said, "We commend Dubai Public Libraries for their active role it has taken to promote IT Literacy in the UAE. Dubai Public Libraries have been an integral component in the success of ICDL GCC Foundation's thrust to offer computer and IT skills training and certification to different individuals in Dubai. We thank Dubai Public Libraries for its full support and adoption of the ICDL standard and are pleased to present it with this award as a symbol of our appreciation."

ICDL is an integrated digital literacy program recognised worldwide. The program empowers individuals with the essential skills and knowledge of computer and practical use of common desktop applications.

The program is based on a recognised global standard acknowledged through testing and proves that the certificate holder has fundamental skills in IT, using the computer and managing files, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and information and communication (Internet and e-mail).

ICDL is endorsed by education ministries, universities and government organisations and is accredited by more than 168 countries and available in more than 40 languages.
