The Bahrain International Garden Show vows to support the World Summit on food Security 2009

The World Summit on Food Security which recently concluded in Rome on November 18th has urged world nations to halve the number of people affected by hunger and undernourishment by 2015. Studies prove that one sixth of humanity still remains undernourished and the figure of 1 billion undernourished people has risen by a staggering 100 million in 2009.

Food security has been a topic of major concern in countries around the world as more and more people are not getting access to nutritious food due to factors like limited supply, high prices or insufficient production.

The Bahrain International Garden Show 2010, which is themed "Seeds for Our Future" will focus on food security in the region. The event will be a platform for agriculture professionals from all parts of the world to get access to relevant and updated information on food security. The event is also aiming to become a forum for participants to discuss and find possible solutions to this global food crisis.

Shaikha Maram Bint Isa Al Khalifa, Head of the Bahrain International Garden Show Organising Committee said "The future of our people relies on the availability of sufficient food and water supplies. This year, the show aims to highlight the topic of food security and the challenges it presents to the region in the future. It also aims to spread awareness about the goals set forth in the World Summit on Food Security 2009, which urges all countries to come together to eradicate hunger and increase investment in the agricultural sector. Bahrain is currently planning to achieve food self-sufficiency and avert shortages by actively commencing numerous food and agriculture projects. The government has also urged the private sector to contribute towards initiatives aimed at producing basic staples as well as the launch of a pisciculture project."

Of the many factors that determine the food security of a country, the following three are the most important ones. Food availability, which means sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis, Food access, which means having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet and Food use which means the appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation.

The 7th Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) will be held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain and will be ably supported by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of the King of Bahrain and the Honorary President of the show's organizing committee. The show is scheduled for February 26 to 28, 2010 at the Bahrain International Convention & Exhibition Center with participation from all major countries at global and regional levels.
