Shell Dubai increases drive to employ more UAE Nationals
- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, April 22 - 2003 at 15:32
- PRESS RELEASE
Shell Companies in Dubai and the Northern Emirates took a stand at the UAE Careers 2003 Exhibition, held from 20th to 23rd April at the Airport Expo Centre in Dubai.
"Shell has a global 'Diversity and Inclusiveness' policy, the aim of which is to increase Shell's drive to diversify its workforce and include more local people in its workforce, both men and women, throughout its operations worldwide," explained Hussain Al-Mahmoudi, External Affairs Manager for Shell Companies in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
"The Shell Group is also committed to Sustainable Development in all its global business activities, and the employment of young, talented local people not only makes sense to Shell from a business perspective but contributes to the wellbeing of the communities that grant Shell its license to operate.
"Shell Dubai attended the UAE Careers 2003 to make Shell's company policies more widely known to the UAE's graduate job seekers and to provide potential graduate employees with more information on Shell as a global organisation, capable of opening up many career opportunities to young, bright UAE Nationals.
"The Career Fair gave UAE graduates the chance to meet some of Shell's Human Resources staff and other UAE Nationals, like myself, who work for Shell and who were able to tell them from first-hand experience what it is like to work for the largest privately owned energy company in the world.
"Shell is not only committed to employing talented male graduates, but is also aiming to increase the number of women in its global workforce. The Shell Group has stated that Shell aims to have 20 per cent of all senior managerial positions filled by women by the year 2008, and it was in line with this commitment that Shell Dubai launched the Emirates Business Women's Award last year, with the backing of Dubai Quality Group.
"The Emirates Business Women's Award is a scheme which is aimed at recognising the development and achievements of women in the UAE and is designed to encourage more women to take up jobs in the UAE's business sectors.
"This is the first year of the awards and on 20th April we were pleased to announce the first two winners of the award who were, in the Business Category, Salwa Saleh, CEO of Condor Medical Waste, and in the Professional Category, Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of the Emirates Environmental Group.
"Presently about four per cent of all Shell employees in Dubai are UAE Nationals and we hope to increase this level significantly in the next few years, hence our presence at the UAE Careers Fair and our support for initiatives such as the Emirates Business Women's Award," he concluded.

Shell Companies in Dubai and the Northern Emirates
Shell's first agent in Dubai was established in 1957 and within three years Shell commissioned the Deira Creek Depot. By 1967 Shell had established a presence in aviation fuels and lubricants services at Dubai Airport. By 1971, Shell had relocated its regional office from Doha to Dubai, coinciding with the formation of the UAE.
Today, from its offices in Dubai, Shell companies market a range of oil and chemicals products across the UAE. Shell's customers include: motorists, to whom a full range of automotive lubricants is offered; industrial and commercial customers, who buy industrial lubricants, bitumen and chemical products; airlines, who purchase jet fuel and lubricants; and customers in the marine sector, who buy Shell's fuel and lubricants for their shipping requirements.
In 1994, Shell opened a purpose-built chemicals terminal and depot at Jebel Ali in Dubai. This 25,000-square metre facility supplies a wide range of petrochemical products to customers throughout the region and is a recent example of Shell's continuing commitment to the economy and future prosperity of the UAE.
Shell has approximately 200 employees working in its head office in Dubai and in other operational facilities in the Northern Emirates.
