- United Arab Emirates: Monday, December 14 - 2009 at 10:32
- PRESS RELEASE
Al Corniche Hospital in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine has appointed a new public health manager, a post also believed to be the first of its kind in a hospital in the United Arab Emirates. The announcement naming Amira Wali, M.S, former program director for NAS HD, a non-governmental organization in Cairo, Egypt, dedicated to human development issues, was made by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) and the hospital's leadership team.
"The new position was created to augment Al Corniche Hospital's leadership in promoting women's and children's health at the local and national level", said Clyde Eder, Chief Operating Officer of Seha. "Some of Wali's core responsibilities will include prenatal care and a focus on child automobile safety with the goal of ensuring that every child leaves Al Corniche Hospital in a properly installed car seat by the end of 2010."
"Amira Wali brings broad international experience in the area of public health," says Ronald Lavater, Chief Executive Officer of Al Corniche Hospital. "Having a public health expert as a member of the health management team is a significant step forward in our mission to set and raise the standard of women's and newborns' health care in the region," he added.
"It is a privilege to join the Seha team and work with Al Corniche leadership", added Ms. Wali. "I look forward to augmenting their programs to upgrade the healthcare delivery systems in Abu Dhabi and to supporting the Public Health programs fostered by the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi."
"We are delighted to congratulate Amira on her position at the Corniche Hospital," said Oliver Harrison, M.D., Head of Public Health and Policy at the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) the regulative body of the Healthcare Sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. "Abu Dhabi faces a number of public health challenges, especially in diabetes and road safety. HAAD and other government agencies are working hard to address these issues, but we cannot do this alone. We need hospitals and other organizations to drive the implementation of these programs. It is very good news that Al Corniche Hospital, which delivers nearly 40% of Abu Dhabi's babies, will be helping to ensure that those babies get the best possible start in life. We are grateful for the unique public health focus that Seha and Johns Hopkins have brought to the market."
Wali's work with NAS HD established basic health programs for underprivileged families. She has also worked in the Washington, D.C., office of the World Health Organization (WHO) on avian influenza management. Wali has a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in international health from George Mason University (Virginia, USA). Her previous international public health work has taken her to Saudi Arabia, Peru and Germany.
Al Corniche Hospital is a Joint Commission International-accredited health care facility. The largest maternity hospital in the UAE, it provides facilities for more than 10,000 births and 216,000 outpatient visits a year. Under a management agreement with Johns Hopkins Medicine International and Seha in September 2008, a Johns Hopkins management team has day-to-day oversight of the 235-bed hospital.
Al Corniche is one of the three hospitals in the UAE under the management of the Baltimore, Md.-based JHI. Tawam Hospital, a 477-bed tertiary care facility in Al Ain, and Al Rahba Hospital, a 135-bed community facility just outside Abu Dhabi City, also are managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International and are accredited by the Joint Commission International.
