  • PRESS RELEASE

Oman Insurance Company (OIC), Canadian University of Dubai (CUD) and the National Safety Council of USA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ultimate aim to promote occupational safety and health awareness amongst businesses in the UAE.

The pact is in line with OIC's commitment to educate clients on enhancing risk and safety management to preserve assets, reduce wastage due to hazards, and decrease their loss ratio. In the long run, better occupational safety and health management are known to boost insurer finances and increase business efficiency.

As part of the agreement, CUD trained selected OIC personnel to foster academic, scientific and cultural collaboration between the two entities about the principles of Occupational Safety & Health.

The first batch of training lasted five days, from the 6th - 10th December 2009 and was held at the CUD campus. Successful candidates were certified as Safety Officers and presented with graduation certificates endorsed by the Canadian University of Dubai and National Safety Council of USA on 15th December 2009 at the convocation ceremony held in the CUD campus.

Commenting on the MoU, Abdul Muttalib Mustafa Al Jaidi, CEO, Oman Insurance Company PSC, said:
"With this initiative, OIC has demonstrated its desire and willingness to go the extra mile for its clients. We remain true to our credo of 'With Us You Are in The Safest Hands.' Along with our value-added services, we present this as an additional ancillary service for our customers. This agreement is in line with our objective of continually improving client service."

According to Dr. Karim Chelli, CEO & Vice Chancellor, CUD, "We are delighted that Oman Insurance has taken the lead in its sector to promote awareness and response to health and safety issues. These can impact the bottom lines of companies to varying degrees, from a minor disruption of operations to destruction of entire facilities. We are keen to transfer global best practice in occupational safety and health awareness to the regional industry and appreciate the efforts of OIC in this regard."

Dr. Samy Sidky, Director of Safety & Health at CUD, said, "The course covers 19 safety modules, teaching principles of occupational safety and health management. Other key modules include hazard recognition, evaluation and control; safety communication, incident reporting and investigation, job safety analysis, and ergonomics and emergency action planning. Graduates are qualified to determine an acceptable level of risk in an organization and can deal with hazard recognition, evaluation, control & prevention and to develop a safety management system in their organization."
