The 1st GCC eGov Exhibition is intended to highlight the milestones of the GCC eGovernment projects and programmes, and provide a platform for constructive and positive dialogue amongst the relevant workers and users. The exhibition will also demonstrate regional and international successful experiences of eGovernment initiatives and programmes, and share views, best practices and IT solutions in the e-services sector to achieve excellence and innovation.
Nine local and federal entities are representing the UAE in the exhibition and the award. These entities are: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economy, Emirates Identity Authority, General Civil Aviation Authority, Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center, Road and Transport Authority, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and Ras Al Khaimah eGovernment Authority.
These entities are competing with other GCC entities in one or more of the award categories: eService, eContent, eMaturity, eEconomy and eProject.
Al Shair, said:
"We are pleased to represent the UAE in this key event, where we will interact with our brothers and colleagues in the GCC government entities and exchange and share information and expertise with regional and international organizations."
He added, "We are going to the First GCC eGov Conference in Oman with a clear futuristic vision inspired by our wise leader H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan who said in his speech during the 38th National Day: "We are paving the way for the gradual transition to a new high-tech, capital intensive, knowledge-based economic model.""
During the past month, the GIA conducted an internal competition to select the projects which would represent the UAE in the e-Gulf Award. The GIA created an electronic website to help Government entities to easily take part in the competition. Through that website the Authority received fifteen nominations from nine federal and local government entities.
A team of GIA's specialized experts studied those nominations as per applicable criteria and selected fifteen of them.
The UAE has a long record of achievements in the field of e-government and e-transformation. In June 2009, an international report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, in co-operation with the IBM Institute for Business Value put the United Arab Emirates in a high ranking position in the field of e-readiness.
The report emphasized the UAE's pan-Arab pioneering position in ICT. It showed that the UAE is first among the Arab countries in business environment, government policy and vision, connectivity and technology infrastructure and consumer and business adoption.
Mr Al Shair has expressed his confidence that the government entities will reflect the UAE's reputable lead position during their participation in the e-Gulf conference, exhibition and award.
E-Gulf Award was launched as per a decision by the GCC Secretariat General. The award aspires towards fundamental transformation in institutional performance to enhance the information society in the Arab Gulf countries. It is granted in appreciation and recognition of government agencies with distinguished performance, applying world-class standards of e-excellence.
The hosting of eGulf award will rotate each year around the GCC countries, the First GCC Award will be held in Oman in December 2009 sponsored by the Omani Information Technology Authority (ITA).
