  • PRESS RELEASE

The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) recently organized two seminars entitled "Legal knowledge in economic systems" and "Intellectual ownership and trademark registry", which were hosted under the supervision of experts in the economic and legal fields.

The seminars were attended by SEDD Director General, H.E. Ali bin Salim Al Mahmoud, as well as a number of officials, managers and SEDD employees. These seminars are in line with SEDD's developmental programs, which are aimed at enabling employees to achieve the highest performance standards based on a well-studied career basis, and to raise corporate activities to new scientific standards that will push the wheel of economic development forward.

Said Al Mahmoud: "SEDD is keen on delivering quality services to its clients through its skillful and efficient employees, who are committed to their work and responsibilities. As such, developing the skills of employees is one of SEDD's top priorities."

He added:

"The protection of intellectual rights has become a worldwide requirement today, and legal knowledge is crucial for every employee. With this in mind, SEDD brought its employees closer to these two concepts through seminars discussing these topics, and our employees have responded well. We are sure that the information provided will enrich our employees' skills and will enhance their distinguished performance in developing the economy of the emirate."

The first seminar, led by legal consultant Mr. Mudathar Abdullah Ali Fadhil, provided employees with information on legal knowledge in economic systems using commercial companies as a model.

Other topics tackled during the seminar included a brief introduction, an explanation of the types of commercial companies, legal paperwork needed during the foundation process, a detailed description on how to establish or terminate a company, as well as partners' responsibility and legal commitment towards the company. The seminar was aimed at enriching employees' legal knowledge and encouraging them to carry out legal proceedings in a manner that guarantees a strong relationship between the Department and its large database of clients.

Emirates Intellectual Ownership Co. CEO, Mr. Ziad Hassouna, led the lecture on the protection of intellectual ownership and trademark registry. He gave a brief introduction on the topic before discussing Arab legislation regarding intellectual ownership, and suggested the establishment of a new Arab law supporting the protection of intellectual ownership.

He also discussed the importance of the national protection of intellectual ownership, and its goals in preserving patents, product trademarks and industrial designs and models, as well as to fend off illegal competition. The lecture ended with a question and answer session on issues that frequently arise during the dealings between employees and clients.

At the end of the sessions, which were conducted on two separate dates, SEDD employees and officials praised the Department's role in enriching their knowledge and developing their individual and collective skills. According to them, broadening their skills set helps to build a strong corporate business according to sound foundations, and it guarantees a high level of performance and competitiveness. It also serves as a reflection of SEDD's sound strategies in housing the latest scientific technologies through training programs, lectures and developmental seminars under supervision of efficient and expert staff.
