Game on for Trend Micro as it offers web security for the PlayStation Portable System

  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, February 07 - 2010 at 13:00
  • PRESS RELEASE

In order to keep online game playing both fun and safe, Trend Micro has announced it now offers Web security services and online safety measures on a subscription basis for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) handheld entertainment system, from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.(SCEI).

To ensure its security solutions reach as many families as possible, Trend Micro is offering a start-up discount to users who purchase the Trend Micro Kids Safety and Trend Micro Web Security services.

Start-up Campaign
Users that subscribe between December 18, 2009 through March 31, 2010, receive 30% off from the regular purchase price. The services may be purchased right from the PSP or PC browser to bring effective protection, immediately.

Trend Micro Kids Safety for PSP (PlayStation Portable) uses Trend Micro's URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content. Blocked categories include those that feature: Adult/Sex, Cults/The Occult, Gambling, Crime, Illegal Drugs, Alcohol/Tobacco, Sex Education, Weapons/Military, and Violence/Discrimination.

Trend Micro Web Security for PSP (PlayStation Portable) uses Trend Micro's Web reputation technology to block PSP users from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data, such as bank account information, or credit card numbers. Web reputation is one of the main components of the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, which is a cloud-client security infrastructure that checks the security of more than five billion URL, email and file queries daily. With Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, PSP users receive instant, real-time protection, enabling them to concentrate on and enjoy the gaming experience.

Though most families remember to install security on their home PCs and laptops, few consider handheld entertainment systems should also be a priority for security, too. As Web browsing on these devices becomes a more popular activity for many consumers, parents should take appropriate steps to ensure that their children are protected from accessing inappropriate Web sites via these handheld systems. Robust security protects them from accidentally visiting a Web site that contains infectious malware, which has been specifically designed to steal personal information. By using both services together, Trend Micro provides multiple layers of protection against malicious Web sites and Internet fraud.

Commenting on the introduction of the Paid Security Services for the PSP, Anthony O'Mara, Senior Vice President, EMEA, Trend Micro, said: "As games get better and even more exciting, online game play is becoming more popular and enjoyable, and bringing a whole new generation to the internet. However, their enjoyment shouldn't and needn't be compromised by the security threats and risks that exist online. It is important that both parents and kids recognize that whenever they go online for whatever activity, they expose themselves to the threats that exist there. This is true whether they're accessing the internet via a PC, mobile device or, in this case, a handheld entertainment system."

He added:

"Making kids aware of risks online at an early age is the first step in arming them with the essential knowledge and internet life skills they will need long term. As the internet will become an increasingly common interface to their social lives, Trend Micro Kids Safety and Trend Micro Web Security are the first steps in that drive for a better understanding of online security."

Trend Micro Kids Safety and Trend Micro Web Security will be available on the PSP system as a paid subscription starting December 18, 2009. The services may be purchased right from PSP or PC browser. Subscribe between December 18, 2009 through March 31, 2010 and receive 30% off from the regular purchase price. Trend Micro previously offered a security service on a free trial basis to PSP owners.
