Developing and honing the diverse skills required for a career in management is no easy task. So many courses promising so much. Which ones are recognised? Which are truly beneficial? Which will propel you and your company to success and prosperity?.

Many questions. One answer. The Institute Of Management, an all-embracing skills portfolio for existing managers - and for those eyeing a managerial career.

The diploma requires attendance at six modular courses. You can attend all within one year - or over a period of three years. But the added benefit is that each course is self-contained. This makes it ideal not only for diploma-hunters - but for those seeking to hone their skills in one particular area.
The first three Diploma courses - Essential Communication Skills; Competitive Edge Management Skills; and Management Decision Skills - take place in Dubai between January and the end of May, 2002. The remaining three follow later in the year - and the full programme will be repeated annually.

So what will all these new-found skills do for YOU? Excellent communication skills will help you get the best from your team. Sound decision-making skills will ensure that you make informed judgements benefiting your organisation. And competitive-edge skills will give you that vital edge required by all effective managers.

First up in January is the three-day course on Essential Communication Skills which will teach you how to:

Conduct presentations like a true professional to win more business.

Guarantee your meetings are always successful and conclusive.

Negotiate skilfully to boost profits - and your own performance.

Good workplace communication is essential nowadays - and topics covered under this heading will include the role of manager as a communicator; one-to-one negotiations; discipline and grievance; and barriers to effective communication.

Presentation Skills taught on the course will include basic presentation techniques; "the nine stages of preparation" and the role of the speaker. Negotiating techniques are key in any business and will be considered in depth - as will the secret of holding effective meetings.

The second of the Institute of Management Diploma courses takes place in March and focuses on Competitive Edge Management Skills. Emphasis during the three-day course will be on Product Planning; Managing Change; and Total Quality Management.

The aim is to foster key management skills including:

Commercial awareness.

Adopting a team approach to product planning.

The ability to plan and develop change action; and

Developing an understanding of quality and Total Quality Management.

Management Decision Skills are the focus of attention during the third of the IM Diploma courses in May. A four-day event, it will concentrate on two of the most fundamental - yet often toughest - aspects of good management: Problem solving and decision-making.

Risk Management is a vital area of business expertise but one which is often neglected. The course will teach all the key elements of this essential discipline as well as Project Management and Quality Systems.

This first trio of courses - led by international management educator David Moulton - have been much-acclaimed for their practical approach. Not only do they build towards the prized Institute of Management Diploma; they offer immediate benefits too.
