Emir to inaugurate Al Khaleej Gas 2 project

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar will officially inaugurate Al Khaleej Gas 2 (AKG-2) on May 10 in the presence of assembled VIPs and invited guests at Doha's Cultural Village.

The event formally acknowledges the significant benefits that AKG-2 will provide the State of Qatar and the local Qatari economy.

AKG-2 is a significant gas project designed to meet the growing energy demands of the State of Qatar, The project is the result of a partnership between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil and is the second phase of the ambitious Al Khaleej Gas project. In combination with the first phase of the project, AKG has a total production capacity of two billion cubic feet of gas per day, making it the largest source of domestic gas supply in the State of Qatar.

Speaking about the upcoming inauguration, Steve Butt, General Manager of Al Khaleej Gas commented: "Al Khaleej Gas is an important project to help build the future of the State of Qatar and fulfill His Highness the Emir's vision. AKG has enough capacity to meet more than half the State's demand for gas in the next ten years, which is more than enough gas to support all the State's electrical demands required to power daily activities in Qatar. We applaud the vision of His Highness the Emir in making this project a reality."

Khalid Laram, Deputy General Manager, Al Khaleej Gas added:

"AKG-2 is truly a groundbreaking and pioneering project which will utilize state-of-the-art technologies to set new standards within the energy industry. Also AKG is supporting His Excellency Abdulla Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah direction to meet the increased need for gas to support the continued growth of domestic industry and development in our country. We look forward to celebrating the inauguration of AKG-II in Doha next month."


Al Khaleej Gas, is an integrated project between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil, and it is operated under a unique agreement with RasGas, as the project's contract operator, to ensure the project is run safely and reliably. Year after year, RasGas' safety and operational performance of AKG has been an exemplary pace setter in the industry.

In realization of the strategy set by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, AKG-2 will make optimal use of the national hydrocarbon resources in order to meet increasing Qatari energy demands and contribute to further development of the State of Qatar's industrial base. In addition to producing quality gas, AKG-2 also produces substantial quantities of condensate and natural gas liquids such as ethane, propane and butane for export and domestic use.

About Al Khaleej Gas (AKG)
The two AKG phases, AKG-1 & AKG-2, will have a total combined production capacity of 2,000 mcfd of clean burning natural gas, making this project one of the largest sources of domestic gas supply in the State of Qatar. The first phase of the project, AKG-1, started up in November 2005.

The agreement to launch AKG was signed in May 2000 between ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum. Designed to meet the growing demand of local industries and to further the State of Qatar's ambitious growth and development plans, AKG-2 uses state-of-the-art technologies to ensure the optimal use of Qatar's hydrocarbon resources. AKG-2 is designed to produces approximately 1,250 million standard cubic feet of gas per day of sales gas, 61,000 barrels of field & plant condensate, 2,400 tons of natural gas liquids (propane and butane) and an estimated 2,500 tons a year of ethane for use as petrochemical feedstock.
