The trade figures published by the German economics ministry on April 28 2003 for the previous year reflect a further substantial increase of German exports to the Gulf countries.

Germany's largest Arab buyer was again Saudi Arabia (€3.433.3 million) followed by the UAE (€3.064.6). Germany mainly supplied machinery, electrical equipment, vehicles as well as iron and steel products to the Gulf.

The biggest gain was in exports from Germany to Bahrain, up 26% but this was still a small market by comparison to the UAE and KSE.

German imports, on the other hand, fell for the second year in succession, mainly due to reduced crude oil purchases. The enormous trade surplus achieved by the Germans is widely regarded as an obstacle to a healthy development of German-Arab economic relations.
