Revolutionary satellite based communication services from Inmarsat on show

Inmarsat Global Area Network - GAN- Inmarsat GAN - Global Area Network - is a mobile solution that allows international organisations and businesses to send and receive high quality, bandwidth intensive information from virtually anywhere in the world. Inmarsat GAN supports data speeds of up to 64 kb/s, almost 7 times faster than speeds offered by current GSM networks. "There has been a market explosion in mobile data needs following huge advances in telecommunications and the globalisation of modern business. Inmarsat's GAN provides these organisation with the data requirements they need, by delivering up to 64kbit/s of bandwidth via Mobile ISDN connection, or a Mobile Packet Data service from a portable notebook size Mobile Satcoms unit," explains Yazan Hatamleh, regional business development manager of Inmarsat Ltd.

Along with quality voice and fax, applications such as remote LAN access, e-mail, e-commerce, Intranet access, image transfer and store-and-forward video can be delivered over GAN. "GAN can operate as an extension of the corporate LAN and WAN providing connections to the PSTN, ISDN and packet networks and therefore, a perfect solution for mobile users in the remote areas of the region, or where that connection is not reliable enough," says Hatamleh. GAN also supports Key Internet user applications, e-commerce/Intranet, email, image transfer and remote working are forecast to grow exponentially.

Inmarsat mini-M
Inmarsat mini-M, a satellite phone with over 94,600 mini-M registrations worldwide as of 1st January 2002 is the most popular solution in Inmarsat's instant Communication portfolio. mini-M offers reliable, worldwide voice communications through small lightweight, and fully portable terminal which provides coverage of approximately 98 per cent of the world's land mass. mini-is a valuable lifeline for corporations and anyone operating beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial networks or when those networks don't offer the quality or level of service required. The phone's digital transceivers also have email, data and fax capabilities through a reliable 2.4 kb/s modem. The Inmarsat mini-M comes in a land mobile, maritime and even aviation enabled version and is licenced for use in over 150 countries worldwide.

Inmarsat C
The third satellite based communication service on show at Cairo Telecomp 2002 is Inmarsat C, a satellite system that provides two-way data communications to and from virtually anywhere in the world. Communications via the Inmarsat C system are data or message-based using simple, economic and hand carried terminals that can be fitted to any vessel, vehicle or aircraft. Inmarsat C is used in the land-mobile, maritime and aeronautical arenas. Hatamleh explains that the system is used by news gatherers, international business travelers and aid workers and for remote monitoring and data collection."
Inmarsat C handles messages up to 32kbytes in length. Each message from an MES (Mobile Earth Station) is transmitted in data packets via satellite to an LES (Land Earth Station), where it is reassembled and then sent to the ultimate addressee via the national and international telecommunications networks. In the reverse direction, callers may send messages to a single MES or to a group of MESs.

Along with its ability to integrate with a wide variety of navigation systems to provide a fault free global position reporting, Maritime Inmarsat C terminals are equipped with a distress-alerting feature that, in the event of an emergency, the system automatically generates and sends a priority distress alert, incorporating position and other information, to rescue co-ordination centers.
