At a ceremony held at the FedEx Dubai Hub, Mr. Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Executive Director of the Customer Management Division at Dubai Customs and Mr.Hamdi Osman, Senior Vice President, FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa signed off the launch of the service designed for Courier companies in Mirsal 2 system, in the presence of senior officers and media.
FedEx systems are built with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) technology, which allows for the transmission of automated shipment data between FedEx and Dubai Customs. This lets FedEx receive electronic clearance on its shipments directly from Customs. In the past only inbound shipments were pre-cleared in this structure; the upgrade now gives FedEx the ability to pre-clear outbound and transit shipments as well.
FedEx participated in the project as part of a Dubai Customs initiative aimed at the airfreight and express transportation industry. Through this development, Dubai Customs encourages the industry to strengthen its shipment clearance systems to meet Dubai's future trading requirements. As FedEx is one of the largest integrators working with Dubai Customs, the high volume of processed shipment declarations required an automated solution to be developed and shared by both.
Mr. Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Executive Director of the Customer Management Division at Dubai Customs, said:
"The information technology capabilities developed by FedEx enhance the daily operations with them and is another example of their support to our efforts in simplifying the movement of trade in general. The express transportation industry will benefit greatly from the Mirsal 2 B2G Submission Channel Service, as it sets the highest international standards for shipment clearance procedures."
Mirsal 2 provides a number of benefits such as the reduction of human errors, the automation of a collaborative business process with Customs, and a faster channel for declaration submissions which do not require clients to be physically present during its process. The overall declaration process will be further simplified for customers.
"As a technology leader and innovator, FedEx is constantly looking for new ways of making the shipping process easier, faster and more flexible. This initiative has real benefits for our customers, such as reducing the amount of paper documentation required as result of this fully automated process, and providing even more comprehensive and timely visibility of a shipment's details. We are honored to work with Dubai Customs on this project, along with sharing our experience on the technology front," said Hamdi Osman, Senior Vice President, FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa. "FedEx provides reliable and time-definite transportation solutions. By upgrading our clearance systems, we have enhanced the shipping process that is vital for moving goods and products into the region."
