  • Middle East: Thursday, September 09 - 2010 at 10:31

The global market for smartphones is expected to grow 55.4% in 2010 amid greater-than-expected demand for smart handsets, according to IDC. The forecast is 10% higher than the previous forecast by the market research firm, which now expects 269.6 million smartphones to be shipped by this year compared to the 173.5 million units shipped in 2009. The outlook for 2011 is also very strong, when the smartphone market is expected to grow 24.5%. However, IDC cautioned that smartphone growth will decline progressively over the course of its five-year forecast period to 13.6% in 2014.
