MCIT & Motorola, Inc cooperate for the advancement of telecoms in Egypt

Within the scope of strategic activities of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to transform Egypt into an information society, the Ministry is implementing an aggressive national plan to achieve Egyptian leadership in communication and information technologies.

Forging alliances with world technology providers is part of this plan. Consequently, yesterday the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology and the President of Motorola, Inc. witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry and Motorla, Inc. Senior Advisor to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Tarek Kamel and Jeff Cherif, GTSS General Manager, Middle East and Africa signed the Agreement in Chicago, USA.

The $10million Agreement aims at contributing to the modernization of the telecommunications infrastructure in Egypt by using technologies capable of satisfying the need for basic services as well as the growing demand for high speed and value added services.

An essential part of this five-year agreement is to strengthen cooperation with international leaders in information and communication technologies for the implementation of the National Plan; and to assure the transfer of expertise and know-how to Egypt for the development of the Egyptian industry.

Motorola is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of wireless communication systems will further its investments in Egypt, by emphasising on the development of local technology, by contributing to the creation of new job opportunities and opening for prospect export of telecom-related services to the Region.

Of equal importance, and in line with the government initiative to enhance the professional skills of Egyptian engineers, Motorola will participate in the Ministry's Professional Training Program currently being implemented in the National Telecommunications Institute. Motorola will provide the training curriculum through its Cellular Institute for up to 80 training weeks per year. The Institute will be structured so as to provide Motorola certification courses to GSM and/or CDMA field engineers. Furthermore, Motorola will make available two Motorola certified trainers, and will supply all necessary course material and documentation, as well as lab and test equipment required for these courses. Motorola will offer these courses to Motorola's global customer base outside and within Egypt.

Moreover, the agreement will assist in the relocation of Motorola headquarters in Egypt to the Pyramids Smart Village. The agreement also entitles for continuing the support for the existing Software Engineering Certification Centre, also launched by MCIT.
