  • PRESS RELEASE

Toshiba has unveiled its first 17-inch notebook, the latest addition to its award-winning Satellite series.

Called the Satellite P20, the new wide-screen range debuts a host of new features never before seen in the notebook market, delivering unprecedented computing power for watching moves, playing games or making music.

With processor power reaching 3.0GHz with HT Technology, up to 80GB hard disk drive (5400 rpm), 512 DDR RAM, DVD-burning capabilities, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200, USB 2.0 connectivity - and much more - the Satellite P20 provides the very best of today's lifestyle-focused mobile computing technology.

It is built on the newest Intel Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology 3.0GHz, backed up by an advanced 800MHz bus and supporting Hyper-Threading Technology.

Hyper-Threading Technology, pioneered on Intel's advanced server processors, helps PCs work more efficiently by maximising processor resources and enabling a single processor to run two separate threads of software simultaneously.

With DVD-burning capabilities (both DVD-RAM and DVD-R/-RW) the Satellite P20 is just like a Hollywood studio on the move.

The flexibility of the Module Bays - allowing optical drives to be swapped for a second battery or hard drive - brings the advantages of modern mobile computing to the home, replacing yesterday's stationary paradigm.

"We have now added desktop publishing on a big, wide-screen display to the list of functions that used to be considered exclusive to desktops," said Ahmed Khalil, regional manager of Toshiba Middle East's computer systems division.

"Whereas notebooks were once a poor cousin, today they are the more competitive rival to desktops, and the best developments are now first arriving in the notebook."

One of the most important of the new features is the display technology for the Satellite P20. Reinforcing Toshiba's leadership in portable display technology, the new Satellite P20 17-inch screen boasts a unique 1440x900 super-crisp pixels in a wide screen 16:10 ratio.

This high-end digital technology showcase includes NVIDIA's GeForce FX Go5200 graphics processor with unshared memory of up to 64MB and DX9 support, Secure Digital (SD), harman/kardon stereo speakers, TV-out port, fast InfraRed, V.92 modem, 10/100 Ethernet, i.LINK (IEEE 1394) port, Bluetooth connectivity and a Toshiba Remote Control.

The new Satellite P20 series runs on Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and includes an integrated suite of award-winning software including Motion DV Studio for digital movie-making, and DVDfun Studio for creating and burning Hollywood-style DVDs.

Current trends mean that as digital entertainment becomes more and more central to people's lives, a powerful and portable multimedia computer is at the centre of that digital leisure time and used increasingly for digital photography, DVD movies, MP3 and CD music, video games and so on.

As with all Toshiba's Satellite models, the P20 comes with a free carrying case and the unique three-year international warranty that applies across the entire Toshiba range of Satellite, Satellite Pro, Tecra, and Portege mobile computers.
