- PRESS RELEASE
Inmarsat, the Total Communications Network, today announced that its Regional BGAN solution has been extended to support Virtual Private Networks (VPN), allowing mobile users to establish high-speed, secure access to corporate networks through the world's leading VPN products.
These improvements have been made as a result of Inmarsat's programme of consultation with its user community and in response to evolving market requirements. VPNs have emerged as a key component of the modern mobile enterprise, with increasingly flexible and remote working driving demand for secure access to corporate networks in any place and at any time.
"This latest software release reinforces Regional BGAN's position as the only business solution for reliable, secure, mobile high-speed enterprise communications," said Issa Odtallah, senior technical manager at Inmarsat Middle East. "These upgrades complete our solution for connectivity to the enterprise in a business climate that demands access to information and resources, as and when required. They are testament to the value that Inmarsat places on consultation with its partners, sales channels, and end user community."
Regional BGAN, a notebook-sized satellite IP modem, offers businesses of all sizes high-speed data services, via satellite, over shared, secure 144kbit/s channels, virtually anywhere in up to 99 countries. It extends the reach of the corporate office to allow businesses to operate without the constraints of terrestrial networks or in locations where these are not available. It enables remote access to corporate networks, to the Internet, to email, and to manage file transfers.

Inmarsat Regional BGAN provides users with all the functionality of GPRS networks, at faster speeds, and is available across Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, northern half of Africa, large parts of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Indian sub-continent, at a time when most GPRS networks are still largely metropolitan based.
Regional BGAN operates via a lightweight, A4 sized portable satellite IP modem, and uses standard interfaces for ease of use. Its key features include:
• Continuous coverage within the satellite footprint
• "Always on" access to IP-based networks, including the Internet and corporate data networks
• Value for money, with users being charged only for the amount of data sent and received rather than time spent online
• Secure 144kbit/s shared channel
• Bluetooth, UBS and Ethernet ports
• Secure VPN access
Inmarsat is continuing to invest and evolve its portfolio of services to meet the high-speed data needs of business today and tomorrow. Regional BGAN represents the first evolution with the 144kbit/s IP connection, and paves the way for Inmarsat's Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN), utilising the I-4 satellites to offer voice and data services at speeds up to 432kbit/s, and currently due for launch in 2004.
Regional BGAN is distributed via a network of distribution partners that include many of the world's largest Telcos. They include: France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications, Telenor Satellite Services, Stratos Global Corporation, Xantic, Morsviazsputnik and The MVS Group, Net Africa, Egyptian Space Company (ESC), OteSat, Triband and Telecom Italia.
