German technicians rebuild Basra infrastructure

  • Iraq: Tuesday, July 29 - 2003 at 09:51

German technicians are now working in British occupied Iraq to restore essential services.

An exploratory team of Germany's Technical Aid Corps (THW) has taken up its work in Basra on July 24. Otto Schily, the German Interior Minister told AME Info in Berlin that the THW would help to reconstruct the destroyed water and power supply systems in Iraq's second largest city.

The services of the German experts were offered at a recent tour of Germany's Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, to Washington, and have been accepted by the US Administration. According to Herr Fischer, the German Government has so far contributed EUR14.2 million for civilian aid to Iraq after the war.

The THW, which is managed by the German Interior Ministry, has 74,000 highly trained voluntary and full-time officials. Last year, the THW was active at 60 locations in 22 countries, helping to set up the infrastructure and providing humanitarian aid.
