What is Erectile Dysfunction - Impotence?
Erectile dysfunction, sometimes called impotence, is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Most men experience an episode of impotence some time in their lives. Impotence can be either physical or psychological in origin.

Physical causes include diseases or anatomical defects like:

• Genitalia

• Poor overall health

• Diabetes

• Poor overall health Cancer

• Prostrate surgery

• Hormonal imbalances

• Spinal cord damage

• Hardening of the arteries

• Blocked blood vessels that no longer allow flow of blood into the penis

If a man is impotent from time to time, and do have erections during the night or can achieve an erection through masturbation then the cause of the problem is more likely to be due to a psychological factor.

Psychological causes include:

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Stress

• Anger

• Conflict with one's partner

• Feeling of guilt

• Fear of intimacy or failure

• Lack of desire

Impotence can also be due some side effects of drugs like tranquilizers, blood pressure medications, certain antidepressants, alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine.

Many of the above factors can cause erectile dysfunction- impotence because they interfere with the flow of the blood or transmission of the nerve impulses to and from the penis. This disorder becomes more common as men get older (sixty and above). Nevertheless, some men can still have a good sexual life in their late eighties.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be treated and cured by different methods depending on the origin of the problem.

• First, the cause of the dysfunction should be determined with the help of a physician. Only then a patient should be considering a treatment. In some cases the treatment is as simple as discontinuing, changing or adjusting the dosage of other drugs that are being used and have side effects related to erectile dysfunction.

• A complete physical examination and hormonal testing are mandatory. This will help in determining whether the origin of the dysfunction is a physical one -blockage in the blood vessels that serve the penis or a hormonal defect. Again the origin of the dysfunction will determine the specific treatment that should be used.

A surgical therapy - would be needed in case of blockage of blood vessels.
Hormonal therapy - would be needed in case of a deficiency of testosterone (male hormone).
Drug therapy - drugs containing phosphordiestrase inhibitors work to increase blood flow to the penis. Some drugs even work on the mental or nerve-transmitting part of erectile dysfunction, which helps the brain communicate to the penis.

Psychotherapy - when a psychological basis is suspected counseling may be suggested. A man may benefit from therapy that teaches him how to reduce his anxiety about sex.

Other strategies - when the above mentioned treatments fail there are other strategies to help a man achieve erection such as: Penile implant and Vacuum erection.

Can anybody use Impotence Drugs?
The only way to know for sure whether these drugs are for you is after the proper consultation with the doctor. Only a doctor can tell you after a complete physical examination and face-to-face conversation whether these drugs are good for you; as they are not for every one.

If using nitrate drugs like nitroglycerine - often used to control chest pain then using impotence drugs at the same time could bring a dangerous level drop in blood pressure. Nitrates are found in many prescription medicines. Make sure that you read the label of the drugs you are using.

It is important to inform your doctor about any prescription / nonprescription medicines that you are taking. As another medicine taken for another health problem might be causing the erectile dysfunction. Drugs against impotence are only for patients with ED and not approved for use in newborns, children, or women.

Drinking alcohol can temporarily impair the ability to get an erection. To get the best results, it is best to eliminate alcohol.

Common side effects of theses drugs can include: nausea, headache, dizziness, facial flushing, sleepiness, infection, sore throat, pain, increased cough, rhinitis, flushing, taste disorder and/or sweating and upset stomach, bluish vision, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light may also occur.

But in very rare cases incidences of fainting might occur. If you experience chest pains during intercourse or if prolonged side effects occur or if you experience any one of the previous symptoms, stop the treatment and consult your doctor immediately.

Impotence drug is used to treat erectile dysfunction and these medicines are not for every one. Also remember to protect yourself and your partner from sexually transmitted diseases.
