BMW Group launches new heat-reflecting technology

  • PRESS RELEASE

In a world first, BMW Group has pioneered an innovative heat-reflecting laminated glass technology into the new BMW 5 and 7 Series which helps reduce internal air temperature in a stationary car by 5 degrees C and lowers surface temperature of seats and storage areas by up to 10 degrees C.

The new heat-reflecting climate comfort glass is used on the rear windscreen and features more than 500 ultra-thin plastic layers embedded into the glass pane. These layers reduce build-up of heat in the interior of the car by reflecting the sun's infrared rays. Each layer is only 0.00001 mm thick which is fifty thousand times thinner than the human hair.

Yet again, BMW Group is setting the standard in bringing cutting-edge technology to our customers, said Mr. Robert Bailey-McEwan, Managing Director, BMW Group Middle East. This technology is especially beneficial to our customers in the Middle East where temperatures can soar drastically and we are confident that customers will appreciate the comfort benefits delivered by this option.

Besides the enhanced passenger comfort, the technology also helps improve fuel economy and noise reduction by putting less pressure on the air-conditioning, which can provide adequate cooling at a lower setting from the start of the journey.

The new technology uses glass and plastic exclusively, where previously metal thin film systems were used. The advantage of using non-metallic interlayers is that they do not screen off the cabin area, ensuring improved reception of communications systems.

This new glass was jointly developed by BMW Group, 3M and Saint-Gobain Sekurit, Germany.
