Qatar Project Management participates in 2nd Annual District Cooling Qatar Summit

Qatar Project Management (QPM), one of the region's premier project management companies and the first Qatari firm in the field, has participated in the 2nd Annual District Cooling Qatar Summit which was held from 25 to 28 September.

The summit, which took place at the Oryx Rotana Hotel, examined the latest developments in the district cooling industry from energy production and water consumption standpoints. QPM assumed an important role in the summit, with one of its subject-matter specialist giving a keynote presentation on the first day of the event.

District cooling is a system whereby buildings and other structures can be cooled by chilled water coming from a single location. This method of refrigeration provides more advantages than the standard standalone air-conditioning approach by maximizing convenience, improving reliability, using less energy and being more environmentally friendly.

On the First day of the summit, QPM's Director of Sustainability, Mr. Salah Nezar- LEED AP, QSAS GCP, gave an address entitled: 'The Path to Carbon-Neutral Air Conditioning Systems for Stadia'. This presentation provided a comprehensive overview on the most recent and matured technologies combining Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems with steam-fired or driven-chilling machines using eco-friendly refrigeration solutions.

Nezar highlighted, through case studies and examples, the importance of delivering solutions capable of integrating carbon-neutral district cooling plants, initially intended to serve stadiums only, in the city infrastructures, particularly the electrical grid which could see the benefit of a substantial relief in peak demand. Carbon-neutral district cooling plants could be used to offset at least 50% of the utility peak electrical load occurring in the afternoon of the summer season.

A full day Pre-Summit Workshop on 'Delivering Carbon Neutral District Cooling Plants in Hot and Wet Climates' was presented by Nezar to a group of experts and specialists in district cooling subject from Europe, Asia and the MENA region. Participants were most satisfied at the level of technical information gathered during this workshop.

Mr. Nezar commented, "The focus in this region is how to optimize the power and water consumption per capita through the use of sustainable solutions such as "Integrated Carbon-Neutral Cooling Technologies" for an environmentally-friendly and more efficient future for the region, and the world as a whole."

QPM stands as one of the region's foremost project management companies, and uses its internationally trained team, and state-of-the-art technologies to set new standards within the industry. The company is active domestically and throughout the MENA region and provides a centralized platform for the project management of local and international developments. Its current project scope includes a growing spectrum of mega projects underway in numerous countries. These projects include civil infrastructure, residential, hospitality, luxury, commercial, office, and tourism developments.
