GEMS augments its management team in preparation for global expansion

As part of its international expansion plans, Global Education Management Systems GEMS, a member of the Varkey Group, has expanded its management team by hiring John Marshall as Business Development Manager and John Mason as Head of Asian Schools-South Asia and Middle East.

Earlier this year, GEMS launched its UK and European operations with the opening of a London office and augmented its activities in India with a new office in Pune.

Marshall has a solid management background in the education sector, including extensive marketing and business development experience. Prior to joining GEMS, he served six years as Commercial Director at the Berlin-based British International School. His background also includes work in currency and equity trading and trade finance with Banque Indosuez in the City of London.

"The global private education sector is a dynamic and fast-growing field. Governments, NGOs and education specialists agree that private education will play an increasingly important role in the development of societies and the transition to knowledge-based economies," said Marshall.

GEMS manages a growing network of international schools, supported by its offices in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, India and soon the United States.

Mason has more than 35 years of experience in education, including seven years as head of the Doon School immediate preceding his appointment to GEMS. He also spent four years as Principal of The Modern High School in Dubai, a GEMS-managed school, and 14 years as Head of the St. James School in Calcutta. He was a member of the Standing Committee on Examinations at the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations and author of a number of textbooks published by Oxford University Press.
