- PRESS RELEASE
Recently appointed new General Manager of Dusit Dubai, Gordon James Gorman is a veteran Global Hotelier and well-travelled Scotsman, directly assuming his new post after a two-year posting with Korea's leading business hotel, the 550-room Grand Intercontinental, Seoul.
Mr. Gorman, or Khun Gordon to the Dusit family and other Thai colleagues, had an early background in Food & Beverage, building up for him a solid reputation for achieving stellar business and service quality results in his previous properties, ranging from luxurious beach resorts to international brand flagships and city hotels.
"All my immediate and long-term efforts will be focused upon leading the Dusit Dubai team towards the further development and speedy delivery of the very highest levels of Thai and Emirates hospitality," he remarked when asked about his overall plan for Dusit Dubai as its new GM.
He added this is a challenge which is made a little easier by the fact that both countries are already recognized globally for their legendary hotel and airline service standards, best exemplified by Thai Airways International (THAI), Emirates Airlines, and Dusit Group.
"Our aim here at the Dusit Dubai will always be to make the hotel stand out in this very competitive market by being Uniquely Thai in everything that we do."
He elaborated on the many Uniquely Thai aspects of staying with Dusit, starting from the very special Thai welcome that Dusit guests receive upon arrival. Similarly Uniquely Thai are the gentle Thai classical music in Dusit Dubai's public areas, the displays of fragrant Thai orchids found around the hotel, selection of fabulous fresh Thai fruits, the fine Thai silks, fabrics and handicrafts in guest rooms and boutique, and many others. On top of it all is a great dining experience, the exclusive Royal Thai cuisine, enhanced by legendary Thai service, found nowhere else in the Emirates.
"Uniquely Thai is a philosophy, a culture, a mindset, an intangible essence of all that is best about Thailand and the Thai people. It will be in the air, you will feel it all around as you enter each and every Dusit hotel."
His first priority, however, is to get to know all the members of the Dusit team. "Even more importantly, I want them to get to know me," he said.
"It is imperative to our future success that the team very quickly understands what it is that I want to achieve for them and for our guests so that we can move forward quickly and cohesively with the improvements needed.
Describing a hotel GM's main responsibilities, he said, "He or she must have a thorough understanding of their guests needs, past, present and future, as well as instinctive marketing savvy, intuitive strategic thinking, something I call future vision, and a total commitment towards creating an environment where employees are happy and productive, while at the same time offering them every opportunity to develop their own individual careers.
Still other important qualities, he said, include healthy doses of character, integrity and self-confidence, a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, the willingness to take risks, the ability to think out of the box in order to see the big picture, and the ability to deliver the best possible business results to owners and shareholders at every opportunity.
He strongly emphasized that the hotel business is a people business, and that any hotelier worth his salt must stay in constant touch with all staff and employees at every level, along with guests, business partners and owners.
Over the years, he has visited the Emirates many times, and he was always very impressed by the rapid pace of development in the hotel sector, which has been stunningly transformed in recent years into one of the most respected and competitive in the world. The Emirates have achieved the clear market leadership in the Middle East in terms of hotel products, standards, and pioneering long-term visionary thinking.
As for the people of Dubai, he said, "I have always felt very comfortable, and quite at home here, even while on vacation, and that everyone has always gone to great lengths to make me and my family feel very welcome by extending to us at every opportunity the unique and sincere hospitality which has made the UAE and it's people so famous around the world."
Knowing Dubai and now getting a post at Dusit Dubai fills him with tremendous excitement. "It's really great to be back," he enthused, "and I look forward to my challenging and dynamic job at Dusit Dubai."
