The chairmen of the two companies, Mr. M.R. Chhabria of Jumbo Electronics and Mr. Mohamed Hassan Omran of Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications signed the agreement amidst top officials from both the companies at the ceremony.

The agreement between Jumbo and Thuraya will further strengthen the geographical spread of the satellite phones, as the phones from Thuraya will integrate satellite, GSM and GPS technologies in one phone. Jumbo is well entrenched as a leader in the telecom segment and its network in UAE and the region is well established. Thuraya phones will reach 99 countries, across Europe, North and Central Africa, Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian sub continent. The reach of Thuraya is vast as it has 80 partners in 3 continents enabling wider coverage outside the footprint area.

Addressing the function prior to the signing ceremony, Mr. Vishesh Bhatia, Chief Operating officer, Jumbo Electronics, said, "The satellite communication industry is poised for explosive growth with breakthrough technological advances as demonstrated by Thuraya." He further added, "Thuraya is the one bold experiment that has succeeded in a business segment that is littered with multiple disasters. Jumbo's strength in
marketing products in UAE and in this region is well known especially in the area of telecom. Joining hands together with Thuraya will further augment that position".

The Jumbo and Thuraya combine will offer the customer a host of benefits, with their respective strengths, in the field of marketing services in the telephony segment. The partnership will also help restore customer confidence, as past experiments have not been able to deliver the requisite results. In the long run, the airtime cost of Thuraya will be less expensive than landlines.
