BMW demonstrates latest car safety features to Dubai Police at Arab Health

  • United Arab Emirates: Saturday, February 11 - 2012 at 15:17
  • PRESS RELEASE

BMW showcased their latest groundbreaking BMW Assist Advanced E-Call (ACN), a ConnectedDrive system to Dubai Police last week during Arab Health 2012, the largest healthcare exhibition and congress in the region and the second largest in the world.

As part of its commitment to support the Government in helping to reduce the number of fatalities on the UAE's roads, the world's leading premium automotive manufacturer presented the innovative safety system to top police officials and demonstrated how faster emergency responses to traffic accidents can dramatically reduce the cases of serious injury and death.

An advanced emergency call system with automatic localisation and injury severity prediction, the BMW Assist Advanced eCall forms part of the mobility services provided by BMW ConnectedDrive available in the BMW Assist package for all current BMW models.

If crash sensors detect that a vehicle has been involved in an accident, Advanced E-Call automatically contacts a BMW call centre and provides detailed information about the accident: its precise location, the number of occupants, the crash severity and direction, the number of deployed airbags and seat belt status. Uniquely, Advanced E-Call also predicts the risk of severe injury using a knowledge-based algorithm known as URGENCY, which takes the above crash parameters into account, allowing emergency services to react even faster and prepare for the specifics of an accident before they depart for the scene.

Stefan Rauscher, Safety Engineer, BMW Group Munich, said; "Important data like crash type and severity are analysed by an algorithm developed by BMW scientists in cooperation with the William Lehman Injury Research Center (WLIRC) in Miami, Florida, one of the largest Level I Trauma Center in the United States of America. URGENCY is calculating the risk of severe injuries to the occupants and on the strength of this information the emergency medical services (EMS) will beprepared in good time and provide adequate medical care to the accident victims."

Rauscher added, "Our aim is to have BMW Assist Advanced E-Call available to customers in every region across the globe and to do that we need to work closely with local authorities to ensure that the necessary technology is in place on the ground. We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to meet with Dubai Police during the Arab Health exhibition. Their feedback was extremely positive, and we look forward to working with them on setting up the necessary support to help us bring this BMW Assist Advanced E-Call system to our BMW customers in Dubai."

Other BMW ConnectedDrive safety features include for instance BMW Head-Up Display, Park Assist and Collision Warning with Brake Activation. Features are optional and available across all new BMW models at BMW Group importers across the region.

BMW is focusing on a holistic approach, based on real-world effectiveness, clearly aiming at enhanced vehicle occupant and road user protection by incorporating active safety, passive safety and post-crash technologies into one visionary concept - BMW Integrated Safety.
